He manages to balance the music on the edge of an almost unbearable emotional intensity without becoming larmoyant or dipping into salon sentimentality. But few pianists have achieved such extraordinary distillations of Brahms's late style as Gould does here, conveying painful passion held in check and peering into the counterpoint, yet maintaining an overall fluidity within profound emotional stasis. まずは間奏曲op１１７を聴いて欲しい。
冒頭の数小節からもう引き込まれずにはいられない。
甘えるかのようにロマンティックなこの表情はどうだろう！
これは「グールドの割には」とか「バッハのグールド」などという前置きなしに聴きたい。
アプローチはオーソドックスにしてその語り口は極めて淡々と昔語りのように進んでいき

そこに想像される世界観は「俗」とは程遠く、祈りのようでさえある。
ブラームスの、グールドの深遠なる哲理をここに見るかのようだ。

1982年2月8-10日、6月30日-7月1日、ニューヨーク、RCAスタジオで録音。日本盤に間奏曲を加えこちらの方がより完璧である。
ヨハネス・ブラームス(1833-97)のピアノ音楽はキャラクター･ピースと呼ばれ、各曲は随所に『キャラクター』があると言われている。確かにこれらの曲には端々にブラームスの他作品に通ずるポリフォニックな書法が顔を出す。バラード作品10は1854年、ラプソディー作品79は1879年の作品である。バラード作品10には有名なベートーヴェンの運命のモチィーフも飛び出してくる。いつも思うことだが、いわゆるクラシック音楽からブラームスの作品を引き算してしまったらどれだけつまらなくなるだろう。ブラームスは他の作曲家に無いサムシングを常に作品の中に持っている希有な作曲家だと思う。
さて、演奏は最晩年のグールドのもので(1982年の秋に彼はこの世を去っている)、グールドの全演奏の中でも3指に入る名演だとおもう。特にバラード作品10は出色で、グールドの力強く速いタッチがこの曲にピッタリで最高だ。

ゴルドベルグ変奏曲の再演とこの曲の演奏でやり残したものは何も無く、グールドはこの世を去ったと思うのは僕だけだろうか?
