グールドの「田園」にはＣＤ１枚に「田園」の全楽章を収めたものもあるが、そちらはテンポがちょっと遅すぎるので初心者にはお薦めすることをためらう。それに対し、本作のものは第１楽章のみだが、きびきびした演奏で実に壮快。オーケストラとは違った魅力に満ちている。私はグールドの全作品の中で屈指の出来だと思う。この「田園」第１楽章のためにだけでも本作を入手する価値はあると考える。「運命」も華を感じさせて素晴らしい。両方を一度に集められる本作はお得な作品である。

田園は難しい曲だと思う。
特にオーケストラでの演奏で、これ！という演奏に出会った事がない。
ところが、このグールドの演奏を聴いて今まで考えを改めることになる。この美しく、深みのある田園。グールドの10本の指で奏でる田園はまさに絶品。これこそ最高の田園だと思う。

グレン・グールド氏によるリスト編曲のベートーヴェン、交響曲第5番の全曲と、第6番「田園」から第一楽章のみが収録されたディスク。録音は第5番が1967年、「田園」が1968年。交響曲第5番は、運命という名前で親しまれたあのスーパーヒーローだが、そのヒーローから管弦楽という肉体を取り除いた純粋な精神にピアニズムという鋼鉄のボディを着せたような印象だ。単なるピアノへの編曲でなく、リストによる輝かしいアレンジがなされているわけだが、グールドは持ち前のテクニックと独特の間合いでこの難曲を弾ききっている。録音も、いつもの固い音だが、20ビットのリマスタリングでクリアに聴こえるか。もちろん唸り声も健在。「田園」も第一楽章のみだが、シンプルなピアノ曲として演奏されている。
