グールドは本格的なオーケストラと共演して、耳タコの有名曲を弾いても、独自の解釈をもって曲に臨み、特に玉をころがすような弱音に代表される自己の美学に背くことなく、天才ぶりを発揮したのがこの作品。グールドだけが目立つ訳ではなく、グールドの演奏に引っ張られるかのように、オーケストラと指揮者（バーンスタイン、ストコフスキー等）の奮闘も賞賛に値する。５７年から６６年にかけての古い録音で、１番古い第２番はモノラルだが、ハンディを感じさせない。１番最後の録音が第５番「皇帝」でこれぞ名演中の名演。音質はさすがに全５曲の中で最高。全体を通して評価しても、本作を凌ぐピアノ協奏曲全集を私は耳にしたことがない。バッハに次いで多くの曲を録音したベートーヴェンへのグールドのリスペクトが感じられる魅力あふれる作品だ。

　グールドの演奏は叙情に流れないところが好きです。乾いたタッチでありながら不思議な深みがある。エモーショナルな演奏家の演奏ばかりを聴いてきた私には耳から鱗でした。

グールドが最も初期に全集を完成させたのは多くの人の予想に反して『ベートーヴェン・ピアノ協奏曲全集』だった。それはピアノ協奏曲第2番 Op.19、1957年4月9-11日　ニューヨーク、コロムビア30番街スタジオ(グールドの3枚目のアルバム)で始まり、グールド24枚目のストコフスキーとの『皇帝』(1966年3月1・4日、ニューヨーク、マンハッタン・センターで録音)で完結してしまう。何よりもグールドはその全集の完成を急いだ、とも取れる。

グールドの録音順はグールドの興味の順とも言える。多くの反対を押し切って最初に録音したゴールドベルグ変奏曲はその典型だろう。つまりグールドはどのピアニストよりもこの5曲のコンチェルトにアイデアを持っていたということになる。その顕著な例が第1番のカデンツァだろう。グールドはそこで自作のカデンツァを披露している。おそらくは誰一人、今後このカデンツァの輝きを上回れないだろう。

情熱とアイデアに満ちたこれほど面白い全集が他にあるだろうか。知ったかぶりして何の冒険もなく弾く多くのピアニストの無能さをこの全集を聴くたびに感じるのだ。
