ワルター翁晩年の貴重なステレオ録音ライヴラリの中でも特に素晴らしい演奏を味わえる一枚である。
別盤の「ザ・グレート」同様ワルターのシューベルトに「外れ」は極めて少ない。

中でも「未完成」は初出以来多くの方々が認める名演中の名演で、この曲の持つロマンティシズムを情緒纏綿に謳い上げた素晴らしいもの。
如何にもワルター翁らしい曲を慈しむ様な丁寧な表現が何とも素敵だ。特にオーケストラがNPOと云う事で、弦パートの絹の様な芳純な味わいが何とも云えない。
冒頭の淡々とした表現から次第に盛り上がって行く様子も実に自然で、例によって曲の随所に「歌」が溢れているところがワルター翁の真骨頂と云えよう。

カップリングの「第５」がこれまた素晴らしく、緩徐楽章など天国的に美しい。
こちらは他の一連の録音同様にCOSOを振っているためNPO程の緻密な演奏にはなっていないが、やはり随所にワルターらしい歌心がちりばめられていて素敵だ。
比較的小品的な扱いをされるこの曲の魅力を再発見させてくれる素晴らしい内容。

傑作歌曲を数多く残したシューベルトの曲中に潜む多くの「歌」を表現出来た最後の指揮者の一人がワルター翁であった事は紛れもない。
休日の午前中などに聴いていると、実に満ち足りた気分に浸れる何とも素敵な一枚だ。

シューベルトの交響曲というと「未完成」ばかり有名ですが、第５番は本当に爽やかこの上ない名曲です。是非ワルター／コロンビア交響楽団の瑞々しい音色で聴いてみて下さい。

本当に美しい演奏。CDやLPレコードの「余白」によく収録されていることもあっていろいろな「未完成」を聴いたが、これを超える録音には出会えないでいる。何度も繰り返される、クレシェンドやデクレシェンドの取り扱いが非常に丁寧で、美しい歌がより優しくなる感じ。聴きほれて気持ちがメロメロになってくる。
