第ニ次世界大戦が終結し、開戦前の危機と混乱を避けてアメリカへ亡命していたブルーノ・ワルターが戦後の平和の到来により、落ち着きを得てベートーヴェンの音楽の解釈と録音に専念した１９５９年前半の録音。

当時は総て真空管の録音装置で録音が行われたそうだが、にもかかわらず音質は良く好評であった。さらにこの度のＣＤによる再発となり、より音質がアップし、巨匠ワルターの真髄を聴くことのできるアルバムだ。
尚、このコロンビア交響楽団は当時のアメリカ在住の演奏家を選りすぐったもので、技術的には一級品の折り紙がつけられるだろう。

このコロンビアの音はアメリカ的なグラマラスなイメージというより、むしろウィーン・フィルに近いものがある。
しかし、ワルターはさらにこの楽団の音質をモーツアルト演奏とベートーヴェン演奏では明らかに使い分けているのがわかる。

モーツアルトの演奏は極めて甘美でありながら風格のあるものであるが、ベートーヴェンのそれはあくまでも知性的で骨格のしっかりしたものであり、しかも、いわゆるベートーヴェンの持つ高貴なる雰囲気が芳しい。
もちろん楽器編成がモーツアルトとベートーヴェンでは違いがあるのだろうが・・・・・・

フルトヴェングラーのライヴの迫真の演奏とはちょっと違い、やはり、丹念に磨き上げられた大理石のような深みのある光彩を放つ気品ある演奏である。
これは現代のベートーヴェン演奏の一つの規範を示していると言って良いもので、当時のトスカニーニ、フルトヴェングラー、カラヤンとは明らかに別物である。

最もワルターに近い存在としてハンス・シュミット・イッセルシュテットの名前が挙げられると思うが、この指揮者も晩年に優れたベートーヴェン演奏を記録しているが、イッセルシュテットとウィーン・フィルの演奏は明らかにこのワルターのベートーヴェン解釈の延長線上に位置していると思う。

ワルターの存在はフルトヴェングラーと共に歴史的であるが、彼の残したベートーヴェン演奏というものも同様に歴史的価値のある巨峯の一つだと言えるだろう。
