尾崎豊のベストというのは、尾崎を好きな人によって色々な形があると思うので、このCDを聞いたら尾崎を網羅したということにはならないと思います。
ただ、このCDは失くした1/2やCOOKIE、優しい日射しなど尾崎の優しい感じの歌が入っていますので、今まで卒業や15の夜やRock調の尾崎しか知らない方には新しい発見があるかもしれません。

個人的には太陽の破片のLIVEバージョンが気に入っています。

トラック５、８、１２など、シングル・カットはされていないものの、オリジナル・アルバムの最後を締め括ったナンバーは、尾崎でしかありえないメッセージ性の強いものなので、聴き応え十分です。そのほか、ブックレットには、録音日時・場所や未発表・既発表などの明確な表記がないので、わかりにくいのですが、このベスト盤の長所は、ほかのアルバムでは聴けないという意味での“レア・トラック”が入っていることです。
トラック１１は、シングル『15の夜（ライブ）』（現在廃盤）のカップリングの再収録。これは文字通り尾崎のラスト・ソング。最後には「どうもありがとう。また、次の、ツアーで、会いましょう」という、いまだ果たせずじまいの約束が入っています。

トラック７は、１１と同じ1993年製作なので、ライヴ盤『約束の日（２）』からの音源。シングル『太陽の破片』（現在廃盤）収録、アルバム未収録のスタジオ・テイクのほうを収めたかったところですが、スタジオ・テイク発売元が別会社なので、ライヴ・ヴァージョン収録となったようです。

トラック６は、クレジットのとおり、このベスト盤発売年と同じ1999年製作というのが事実ならば、未発表ライヴということになります。ただし、完全な未発表ではなく、ビデオ『TOUR 1991 BIRTH』の音源のひとつ、横浜アリーナの音源をリミックスしたものらしいです。
トラック１は、『TEENBEAT BOX』（尾崎が十代にリリースしたアルバム三枚＋特典CD付き、現在廃盤）で特典として初CD化されたシングル・ヴァージョンを再収録したもの。

1984年のある日、ノンストップでPVを流すテレビ番組で偶然、目にした「十七歳の地図」のPV（初期PV集『6 PIECES OF STORY』に収録。『OZAKI・18 THE FIRST APPEARANCE IN TOKYO AT SINJUKU』として発売された同年３月のデビューライヴの映像も、断片的に使用している）。その時に覚えた衝撃は、とても言葉になるものではないが、そのPVで使用された《音》は、このアルバムに収録されているシングル・ヴァージョンと同じものだった（シングル用にヴォーカルを録りなおし、尾崎自身のハーモニー・ヴォーカルも加えられたもの）。そういった事情もあって、個人的に「十七歳の地図」は、こちらの-より力強い歌声が聴ける-ヴァージョンの方が気に入っている（ヒマな時など、アルバム・ヴァージョンと聴き比べてみるのもいいかもしれない）。

それにしても、どう編集し、構成しても、尾崎豊の遺した音楽の全体像は、とてもつかまえきれないような気がしてならない。このアルバムを聴いた印象も、またしかり。これだけで終わることなく、オリジナル・アルバムほか、もともと発表された形でさらに感じ取ってもらうことを、それぞれの《音》と《言葉》たちが欲しているかのようですらある。
