高校時代に始めてこの曲を聴いて以来１０年以上時を経つけれど、この曲は色褪せるどころか寧ろ良くも悪くも新鮮さとリアリティーを自身に与え続ける不思議な曲だ。

つまり、初めて聞いた頃はその流れるようなメロディーと学生時代にありがちな学校或いは校則・体制等のありがちな反抗が歌われている事に共感してのリアリティーで聞き入っていたのだが、色々紆余曲折試行錯誤しつつ年が経つ程に、単に卒業というのは学校やその他諸々の柵・拘束から開放されることは卒業の一端に過ぎないのだと薄々感じつつ、実際そのような状況で悩んでいる自分に感じるようになった時、この曲の新たなリアリティーを私に与えているのではと感じる。

事実「あと何度自分自身 卒業すれば
本当の自分に たどりつけるだろう」

というフレーズは高校時代には全く気にしないフレーズだったけれども、今になってこのフレーズの重みを感じる。当たり前と言えば当たり前なのだが、それらのしがらみというのは大部分が自分自身で作り上げてしまったしがらみなのかもしれない。

そしてそこから開放・卒業するには結局自身にかかっているのだろうという事も、この曲を聴くとふつふつと感じる。

このCDは、新たに「卒業」のライヴ・トラックを加え、1985年1月21日発売のアナログ・12インチ・シングルを復刻したものです。

トラック１は、『回帰線』や『愛すべきものすべてに』に収録のものと同じスタジオ・テイク。石を投げようとしている尾崎を背後から写したアナログ盤復刻ジャケットは、「団塊の世代」以降としてははじめて体制に対して石を投げようとしたという、トラック１の内容と社会的意義を象徴するものです。

トラック２は、セカンド・アルバム『回帰線』やベスト盤『愛すべきものすべてに』に収録のものよりも30秒長いアナログ・12インチ・シングル・ヴァージョン。イントロからちがうだけではなく、間奏でジグザグとスクランブリング交差点を駆けていくようなギター・ソロのあるこのシングル・ヴァージョンのほうがカッコよく聴こえます。特典CDの一曲として、このシングル・ヴァージョンをはじめてCD収録した『TEENBEAT BOX』も現在は廃盤なので、本CD収録曲中いちばんのレア・トラックと言えます。
トラック３は、もちろん復刻前のアナログ・12インチ・シングルには未収録ですが、ライヴ盤『約束の日（２）』には収録されているライヴ・ヴァージョン（1991．10．30代々木オリンピック・プール）。このライヴ・ヴァージョンや『MISSING BOY』に収録されているライヴ・ヴァージョン（1985．11．14代々木オリンピック・プール）での尾崎のやさしいMCを聴くと、尾崎は、「卒業」がたんに乱暴なだけの“投石”の讃歌としてひとり歩きしないように細心の注意を払っていたことがよくわかるとともに、「卒業」はやさしい大人へと卒業することの讃歌でもあったことにあらためて気づかされます。

西田佐知子の「アカシアの雨がやむとき」が60年安保を象徴する歌であるならば、この尾崎豊の「卒業」は、いじめや校内暴力、管理教育で荒廃していた80年代中頃を、まさしく象徴する歌である。

私はこの歌が流行っていた頃は、まさに不良からのいじめに苦しめられていた高校時代で、当時は12インチ・シングルとして発売されたこのレコードも所有していた。私が生まれて初めて買った12インチ盤であり、7インチが700円の時代に当時1,200円のこの12インチ盤は、小遣いの少なかった当時の高校生にとって非常に重い買い物であったのである。

内容的にもそうであるが、この歌の6分40秒にこそ、尾崎豊のすべてがある。この歌や「15の夜」の歌詞だけで尾崎を評価して欲しくないという者もあろうが、この「卒業」のインパクトの前には、他の曲がすべて霞んでしまっているのである。全く同時期に菊池桃子や斉藤由貴が同名異曲を発売し、当時はそれらのほうが売れたのであるが、最後に残ったのはこの尾崎の「卒業」であり、尾崎がこの歌の中で激しく憎んでいた筈の「大人達」からも広く支持されているのである。そして今でも、この歌のように卒業式の時期に窓ガラスが割られる事件は、途絶えることが無いのである。

高校も出たし大学も出た私ももう尾崎より15年近くも年上になってしまったが、巷にこの歌が流れる季節が訪れるたび、「お前は大学で一体何を学んできたのだ！！」ときつく問い詰められているような強迫観念にかられ、大変胸が苦しくなる歌なのである。

私はこの歌のように窓ガラスを壊したことこそないが灰色の10代を過ごしており、楽しい想い出など全く何もなく同窓会にも一切参加していない。この歌の衝撃で、大学時代には教職も受講しなかったのである。そんな古き悪しき時代の空気が、この歌の中にすべて集約されている。
