　ロードを共に走り続けてきた仲間達と作り上げた「時代を超えた音の厚み」それが歌を包んでいます。今もライヴで歌われているナンバーが何曲も含まれていて彼のキャリアの中でも何度目かのピークにあたるアルバムと言えます。

「ハロー、ロックン・ロール・シティ」これは彼と僕らオーディエンスのライヴでの合言葉。あなたもぜひライヴ会場でこのフレーズを叫んでみてください！

最近はキレイな曲をキレイに歌うシンガーが多くなってしまい、その分甘口の音楽ばかりが街中に溢れかえっている。ベーシックな部分でブルースやロックから多大なる影響を受けたと思わせるような音楽家がどんどん少なくなって行っているこの国の音楽は、この先いったいどうなってしまうのか。
浜田省吾はそれら甘口の音楽には常に一定の距離を置いて活動を続けるシンガー。
決して音域が広いわけでも声量が豊かなわけでもないが、ザラザラしたジーンズを思わせるアメリカ西海岸風の乾いた肌触りのロック/ポップスを歌い続けている姿勢には頭が下がる。
代表作『Ｊ−ＢＯＹ』などでもたびたび登場するが、この国の若者が持つ焦燥感のようなものを歌にする事においては「この人の右に出る者はいない」と言ってよい。
問題を投げかけるような歌詞(その割に答えは出していないが)をストレートに歌う時の疾風感は見事。それは反面、自分自身を切りつけているようでもあり、自己のアイデンティティ−を必死に探しているふうでもある。その姿がファンの心をつかんでいるとも言えるのだろうけれども。
音楽的にはオーソドックスな旋律を繰り返す日本的な楽曲が多く、例えばユーミンや陽水のような“珠玉のメロディーラインが目白押し”という感じではない。しかしこのアルバムのジャケットのように白いＴシャツにジーンズという、ごくシンプルないでたちのケレン味のなさが彼の音楽スタイルを如実に示している。
ボーカルのバックでパフォーマンスを繰り広げるような甘味で無意味なジャリタレの音楽が闊歩している現代だが、ここまでストイックに自己の世界を掘り下げて行くシンガーにはまだまだ頑張ってもらいたい。「Dance」はなかなかの名曲だ。

冒頭の「MONEY」は浜田省吾にしては珍しく激情型のハードなＲ＆Ｒ。金が人間を狂わせていく様を痛烈に表現している。初めてダンス・ナンバーに挑戦したことで話題にもなった「DANCE」では，様々なストレスの中で，束の間の現実逃避に走る現代人の姿が歌われるなど，現代社会の問題をシリアスに描いている。

その一方で，あり余る若さゆえ喧嘩と暴走を繰り返し，ありふれた日常生活しかない我が町を出て行く若者を描いた「DADDY’S TOWN」は，若さゆえの「大人社会への反抗」という誰もが経験するテーマをストレートに描き，ソウル／Ｒ＆Ｂへの傾倒がうかがえるスウィートなコーラスが郷愁を誘う。若き日の恋と別れを爽やかに，そしてほろ苦く描いたバラード「EDGE OF THE KNIFE」，爽快なＲ＆Ｒ「MAINSTREET」など，現代社会の抱える問題に心を痛めながらも，奔放な青春時代への郷愁も忘れない・・・「街」とそこに生活する「人々」を等身大で歌い上げる浜田省吾らしい好作だ。

個人的には，バラードの「PAIN」が好きだ。美しくも胸が張り裂けそうになるほど悲しい曲で，深い悲しみに打ちひしがれながらも何とか立ち直ろうとする様が切々と描かれている。
社会の矛盾に共に怒りながら，悲しみを分かち合いながら，過ぎ去った青春を懐かしみながら，生きる勇気を与えてくれるアルバム。
