『HOMEBOUND』『愛の世代の前に』に続く、“3部作”の集大成ともいえるアルバム。「『この星が…』までいってしまったので、」と省吾自身が『Down by the mainstreet』をリリースするときに自嘲気味に(？)語っていました。どんどんいっちゃってください！　今なお色あせない素晴らしいアルバム。スプリングスティーンが「なんていい声なんだ！」と語ったという『マイホームタウン』、なぜかライブで歌われることが少ないが、大好きなラブソング『凱旋門』、ライブ本編で何度もトリを務めた『僕と彼女と週末に』など聴き応え抜群。はずれがありません。

ジャケットの印象などから、反核アルバムと誤解している人が多いかもしれませんが、私にとってはリリース当時擦り切れるほど聞いた忘れることのできないアルバムです。今でもライブで唄われているバラード（ロマンス・ブルー、愛しい人へ、凱旋門）が特に素晴らしいです。「僕と彼女と週末に」も、社会問題的なメッセージソングではなく、（大事な）「君を守りたい」というもっと自分たちに身近なことを唄ったものだと思います。なにより浜田さんが、自身の作品の中から選んでお父様の棺に入れたアルバムです。

暗いニュースや深刻な社会問題ばかりの現代社会。皆，一生懸命生きているはずなのに出口のない暗闇をさまよっているかのように光が見えない。こんなとき，感情的に現状を打ち壊せと主張するアーティストが多い中，浜田省吾は現代社会への問題提起を行い，どうしたらいいのかと苦悩する。「打ち壊せ」と言うことは単純明快で一見カッコいい。でも，それには多くの犠牲が伴う。事はそう簡単なものではなく，具体的解決策を提示しない「現状打破」論など無意味であることを浜田省吾は知っている。だからこそ，リスナーと共に苦悩しながら，一筋の光明を見出そうとする。このアルバムではそんな浜田省吾の真摯な姿勢がひしひしと伝わってくる。

「マイ・ホーム・タウン」や「パーキング・メーターに気をつけろ!」では，画一的に開発されたニュータウンに象徴されるように経済的には豊かになったが，豊かさを実感できない現代社会の問題を等身大に描き，「僕と彼女と週末に」では，核問題や途絶えることのない国際紛争など地球レベルの問題についても，僕たち一人ひとりはどうあるべきなのかを問いかけている。

そして，こんな不透明で不安だらけの世界でも，「君をこの手に抱きしめた時・・・誰のために僕が生まれてきたのかわかった」と愛することの大切さを歌い（＝「愛しい人へ」），たとえどんな苦難が押し寄せようとも「君を守りたい　ただ一人の」と誓う。そして，僕たち一人ひとりがこの気持ちを大切にすることで，地球レベルの危機は回避できると信じる。それが本作での浜田省吾の結論である。そして，その思いを「いつか子供たちにこの時代を伝えたい　どんなふうに希望をつないできたか」と語っている（＝「僕と彼女と週末に」）。

個人的には，若さゆえ本当の愛を見つけられずに破局する二人を，疾走感あふれるＲ＆Ｒで描いた「さよならスウィート・ホーム」や，愛おしい人への思いをかみしめるように切々と歌い上げた「凱旋門」なども好きだ。絶望の中にも希望を見出そうとするポジティヴな姿勢に心打たれるアルバム。
