　別な意味での彼の代表曲となったHungrySpiderなど、これまでの正統派ラヴソング路線を抜け出そうとするチャレンジが随所に見られる。全曲を通して感じられるのは相手に関して非常に表面的(あるいは極めてプラトニックな)恋愛感と、どうしようもなく深い自己嫌悪・自問自答が印象的で、王道ポップスをから抜け出したかった彼の葛藤を強く感じる一枚。Cicadaというタイトルには定着してしまったイメージからの脱皮という意味があるのかもしれない。その後脱皮を終えた彼は純粋に美しい曲を連発するようになったが、個人的には悩みもがいている彼の方が好きではある。

最新アルバムが出たばかりですが、私のipodで一番かかっているのはこのアルバムです。出た当初は「はずれのない曲ばかりの、目立たないけどいいアルバム。佳作だなあ」と思っていたものですが、今なお季節を問わずに聞いてしまう作品です。もし、槇原敬之のCDを聞いた事がない人にすすめるとしたら、間違いなくこのCDになることでしょう。曲もさまざまなバラエティに富んでおり、王道POPから珠玉のバラードまで、彼の幅広さを証明する1枚になっています。特にエキゾチックな雰囲気の「STAR FERRY」は聴きもの。平井堅の「センチメンタル」に大きな影響を与えてるな、と勘繰ってしまうほど。またタイトル曲「cicada」もすばらしい。11曲のさまざまな曲を堪能した後に聞くこの曲はまさに映画や物語のエンディングを飾るかのようです。物語から覚めてしまう一抹の寂しさを漂わせながら、さわやかな余韻を残す珠玉の一曲。まるで、去っていく夏の寂しさを思わせるようです。もし、まだ聴いていなかったらぜひ手にして欲しい1枚です。

　槇原敬之のアルバムの中でも、特に名盤だと思います。槇原敬之のセンスが最大限に発揮されており、メロディーライン、アレンジすべて素晴らしく、耳に心地よく響いてきます。一枚のアルバムの中でひとつの世界が完結しているように思います。個人的には、「pool」、「Name Of Love」が好きです。夏のアルバムなのに、真冬でも聴いてしまう、それだけ音楽が美しいということだと思います。
　初期の頃のイメージとは違う面もあると思いますが、槇原敬之の曲をいいなぁと、少しでも思ったことがある方にはぜひ聴いていただきたいです。
