第一期ＳＯＮＹ在籍時代に発表された｢カリント工場の煙突の上に｣、
｢LOVESONG BLUE｣、｢CAFE JAPAN｣、｢JUNK LAND｣からの
選曲で構成されたBESTです。
前半と後半の展開がガラッと変わりそこがまた気持ちが良い
｢JUNK LAND｣、落ち込んでいるときに励ましてくれる大ヒット曲｢田園｣、
これでもかという最強バラードの｢メロディ｣、どんなことだって
頑張ればできると後押ししてくれる｢Mr.Lonly｣、
故郷の場面が思い浮かぶ｢カリント工場の煙突の上に｣と
圧倒的なボーカルと、練りに練られた曲にのせ聴くものの心を
捕らえて放さない曲達。
人の心に風景をこれほど歌で見せることができるアーティストは
本当にごく限られていると思います。
これは素晴らしい事と思います。

玉置さんのソロの初期シングルベストを聴きたいのなら、『アーリータイムズ』が、87年のデビュー曲『オールアイドゥー』から93年の『コール』まで収録されているので、良いと思いますが、それ以降の後期のシングルベストを聴きたいのであれば、この『ベスト田園』が一番良いと思います。収録曲も、大ヒットを飛ばした『田園』もちろんの事、『MR.LONELY』や『メロディー』などの他のヒット曲、アルバム曲から『正義のヒーロー』や『元気な町』などの、元気が出る暖かい隠れた名曲がズラッと文句無しに入っており、玉置さんを初めて聴いてみたい人にはもちろん、安全地帯時代から初期のソロ時代を終え、キティレコードからソニーレコードに移籍した玉置さんの音楽の魅力の変化が、分かる一枚でもあります。

このベスト・アルバムには、人生の応援歌のようなヒット曲「田園」、たたみかけるラップが心地よく、サビの伸びやかさに惹かれる「JUNK LAND」、アコースティックギターにのせて囁くような歌唱がステキな「STAR」、そしてあの名曲「メロディー」が収録されています。

玉置浩二が「メロディー」を歌った映像を見た時、いつのまにか泣きながら聴いていました。この歌で、大人の真のシンガー・ソング・ライターとしての地位を確立したのだと思いました。

♪きみのこと　忘れないよ　いつだって　楽しくやったよ　メロディー　泣かないで　あの歌は　心から　聞こえてくるよ♪

「メロディー」で玉置が伝えたかったのは、単なる郷愁というものではなく、表現者として真摯に歌うことの大切さをリスナーに届けたかったのでしょう。それぞれの人の長い人生の歩みと共に、いつも歌がそばにありました。心の奥底に潜み、流れているメロディーは違っていても、その歌から感じ取った優しさは共有できます。

そんな思いが、この歌を聴きながら伝わってきます。不器用だけど優しい大人が歌うメッセージとはこういうものだ、という答を提示されたように感じました。
歌い継いで欲しい名曲です。
