８９~９０年というのは、あの有名なバンドブームが隆盛を極めた時期だった。本盤は、ソニーレーベルを中心とした選曲のようで尚更その色は濃く、バンドブームとして代名詞的だったバンドで８割を占め、それ以外のソロシンガーでもその影響を受けてかロック色が強い歌手が多い。

この当時のブームは、バンドが乱立状態で飽和していたというイメージがあるが、しかし振りかえるとそれ以前で市民権を得、一つのジャンルとして確立された邦楽的ポップロックを更に色々なジャンルに細分化させる事に成功した時代だったのか、とも思う。８０年代初期までアングラだったロックをＢＯΦＷＹ、レベッカ等によって大衆化させ、そのジャンル選択の多様性をバンドブームが広げたという事だ。Ｘによって、ビジュアル重視のロック＆クラシックとロックの融合を確立、米米によってホーン楽器重視のビッグバンド形式を確立、プリプリによって同姓まで支持されるガールズバンドの確立、ＴＭＮによってロックと電子楽器＆リズムの融合を確立、チューブにより歌謡哀愁的湘南ロックの確立といった具合に。乱発傾向と思いきや各々のバンドが実に確立された方向性を持っていたのは驚きだし、無意識の内に当時のファンもその斬新な確立されたサウンドを支持したのかもしれない。

加えて、その時代のみならずこの時代で勃興した音楽性は、何らかの形で現在の音楽に継承されている事実も見逃せない。例えばＸは、ルナシー・グレイ等のビジュアルブームの導火線として、プリプリは、ジュディマリ・ヒスブル等の女性ならではの歌詞によって同姓ファンを取り込むという手法、ＴＭＮは、ＥＬＴ等のデジタルロックとも言うべきジャンルへと繋がる気がする。

そのような意味で、この時代の音楽はロックの多様化と同時に、現在流行するポップロックとも言うべき日本ならではの音楽のルーツとなる原石が、至るところに散りばめられていると感じる。
