谷村有美のアルバムでは「６曲目が谷間だ」と書いてあるのを見たことがある。面白いことを言うなあと彼女のアルバムを振り返ると、案外それが当たっていたりする。
そして、この「愛する人へ」。その６曲目が例に漏れずやや不調であること以外、よくぞここまでというほど名曲が揃っている。
従来、彼女は自信ある自作曲以外、外部ライターに頼っていた、その割合は年毎に減っていたが特に前々作あたりまではシンガーという側面のほうが大きかったように思う。それがとうとう今回１００％自らの曲目で埋め尽くしたのである。そして彼女自身の個性を思い存分に出しつつ、実に素晴らしいアルバムを作り上げた。
私に彼女のアルバムの中で１つ選べと言われれば、初期の「フェイス」かこの「愛する人へ」を選択するだろう。持ち味の‘クリスタルヴォイス’も声質・表現力とも最高潮を迎えていた時期でもある。
そして、さらに評価したいのは彼女がアルバムのまとまりを損なうことなく、実にさまざまなバリエーションの曲を作りあげていることにある。バラード、コミカルソング、アップテンポ、さまざまな恋物語がここにある。また「一緒に暮らそう」は彼女の母をモデルにした実体験ソングであることはファンの間ではよく知られた話である。
中古市場ではこのアルバムがタダ同然で売買されていることが残念でならない。

一番尊敬する音楽家として、谷村有美さんの音楽には長く接してきています。このアルバムの前作 Docile は、彼女がある意味七転八倒して「難産」したアルバムでした。変わって本作は、その反省か、彼女がラジオで語った言葉によると「朝は７時に起き、朝食を食べ、スタジオに通い、夜１２時には遅くとも帰宅、就寝」という生活リズムの中で作られたアルバムです。制作期間中にはオーストラリアとケニアを訪問し、そこで得られたインスピレーションも盛り込まれている様に思います。前作 Docile で感じられた「身体をすり減らして作りました」という切実さではなく、才能ある音楽家がその才能を自身でコントロールしながら作った、そんな「折り目正しさ」が感じられるアルバムです。

アルバムのイメージは「爽やかなブルー」と「始まり」。特にアルバムリリース後にシングルカットされた「Somebody Loves you」はとても完成度の高い曲に仕上がっています。

その中で私一番のおすすめは、有美さんの代名詞でもあるクリスタルボイスが最も引立っている「最後のＫＩＳＳ」。ぜひとも聞いて欲しい。９０年代後半のライヴでは会場と一体になったアレンジで欠かせない曲にもなっています。

谷村有美のDJ番組で流されていた「好きこそものの上手なれ」が気になっていました。このアルバムに収録されています。そのために買ったようなものです。
