"何を今更、、"の感は否めず、また、語ろうと思うところもその大半は他のレビュワーの方々の総まとめ的にしかならないかも知れません。しかしながら、やはり80sを代表する一作であるに留まらず、今の時代に至るまでこの作品を凌駕する作品が出現していない事実からして、はやり何かしら本作('82年作)について一言コメントをしておこうと思い立った訳です。
既にショウビズの世界ではその名は通っていたM.ジャクソンでしょうが、前作"オフ・ザ・ウォール"に於いて、稀代の名アレンジャー/名プロデューサーとして名を馳せていたQ.ジョーンズを迎えたことで、M.ジャクソンの才能が一気に"開花させられた"と言うのはM.ジャクソンに失礼でしょうか?
見事に時代のニーズと先見性の認知に長けたQ.ジョーンズ、コンポーザーとして見事な作品を提供したR.テンパートン、そして何より"誰にも止められない勢い"でスーパースター街道を突っ走ったM.ジャクソン(無論、本人の努力もあったことでしょう)。この三者が時を同じくして80s初期に巡り会えた事が何よりの奇跡だったと思います。
見事にコントロールされたアルバム、エンターテイメント斯くありき、行き過ぎないゴージャスさ、加えて手練手管のサポートミュージシャン。まさに眩しい作品です。
名盤と言う言葉を使うと、少しニュアンスが違うように思うのですが、間違いなく世紀の傑作アルバムと位置付けてもよい作品かと思います。

ステレオ高音質の見本。
自然ないい音の手本とも言うべき音質です。
リマスター盤も出ていますが、このSACD盤を聴くと、リマスターがいかに人工的で刺激の強い音を強くしているのかということに気がつきました。

SACD／STEREO、POPSでは代表的な１枚です。

1982年に発表された。二〇世紀最も売れ、4000万枚以上はこれだけという、ブッチギリの出来。グラミー賞は7部門獲得。9曲中、7曲がトップ10入りしたという売れ行き、実績、何から何まで超度級のアルバム。音楽自体も完成されている。幅の広い音楽性。マスト・アイテムである。これ以上いう必要はない。

　これを聞いてピンとこないうちは、Ｒ＆Ｂやソウルを何たるかをあまりわかっていないのかもしれない。
