JUDY AND MARYが前作の「THE POWER SOURCE」で日本音楽界の頂点に立って、
それだけでは欲足らずさらに音楽性の高いものを作りたいと考え作ったアルバムが
この「POP LIFE」。
「ミュージックファイター」をシングルとして発表した時点で、JUDY AND MARYの音楽性が変わったと思います。
また、このアルバムではＴＡＫＵＹＡが完全に主導権を握って作っているのがわかります。
「イロトリドリ ノ セカイ」もＴＡＫＵＹＡが作曲ですね。この曲は個人的に名曲だと思います。素晴らしいです。
このアルバム、いろいろとこれからのJUDY AND MARYが向かっていく方向性がうかがい知ることができるアルバムだと思います。
最後に「LOVER SOUL」を持ってきたことで、このアルバムがなにを意味するのかわかるような気がします。
このアルバムを期にJUDY AND MARYは長期の休養に入ることになります。

バンド史上最大のセールスを記録した前作「THE POWER SOURCE」以降、
ロリポップやパンクといったスタイルから抜け出し、OOIOOや、SLITSといった
フリーキーなフリーフォーム・ミュージックへの接近を見せた意欲的な作品が
6枚目となる1998年発表の今作「POP LIFE」。
アプローチはアヴァンギャルドのそれなのに着地点はタイトル通りドPOP。
安定感のあるドラムスとベースがバンドを支え、その上であくまでもコントロールされた
ギターとボーカルがオーバードライブする絶妙なバランス感覚。
一般的なセンスからは逸脱した才覚を持ったギタリストの存在が
最大の武器として発揮されていたバンドとしてのピークを感じさせる。

ジュディマリ後期の活動休止前の最後のアルバム。
メンバー間での人間関係がギクシャクしていたのが、
ブックレットの作詞・作曲者名で見て取れるアルバムです。

とはいえ、中に詰まった楽曲はどれも高レベル！
ミュージックファイターのようなブッ飛んだ曲もあるかと思えば
イロトリドリノセカイやLOVER SOULのようなバラード、

散歩道、BATHROOM、ジーザス！ジーザス！のような可愛い曲もあります。
個人的にお気に入りの手紙をかくよも収録されています。
価格も中古ではこなれていますし、一度騙されたと思って聞いてみては・・・？
