個人的には、佐野元春のアルバムでは一番の最高傑作だと思っています。曲調としては穏やかで内省的な曲が目立ちますが、佐野元春の、メロディメイカー、詩人としての素晴らしさがギュッと詰まっています。また、今作で最後となってしまったザ・ハートランドの演奏も、ただただ”素晴らしい”の一言。この完成度の高さは、未だに計り知れないほど。まさに”エヴァーグリーン”という言葉がふさわしい、いつ聴いても瑞々しく、新鮮な名作。日本人でも、こんなに凄いアルバムを作ってしまう人がいるのです。いや、日本人の佐野元春だからこそ作り上げることが出来たのかもしれません。★5つどころか、10個はつけたい大名盤。

スウィート１６が発散的な最高傑作なら、今作はある種内省的な最高傑作でしょう。これは偶然ではなく、両者が短い期間の間に立て続けに発表されたことからも、それぞれのコンセプトを明確にしながらもほぼ同一の元春のイデオロギーの元で作られたことに起因するのではないでしょうか。こんなにカッコイイロックを聴かせるのは日本では元春くらいじゃないでしょうか。とにかく聴いて欲しい１枚です。

佐野元春９０年代の最高傑作『ザ・サークル』は彼のマスターピースであると共に、日本のロックの未だ誰も破ることのできない最高峰の名盤と言えるでしょう。自信を持って老若男女すべての人たちにお薦めします。Ｒ＆Ｂのサウンドに乗って、彼の剥き出しの感情や訴えかけるような想いが、緩やかなサウンドの中で叫ばれるように響いてきます。『彼女の隣人』という曲が７曲目にあるのですが、この曲は本当に名曲です。心配は要らない、共に歩いてゆこうと告白している歌詞の内容や、心臓の鼓動をモチーフにしたドラムのリズムに、心の奥深くをドンッ！ドンッ！と叩かれる衝撃を受けました。痛みに溢れた内容の曲が殆どですが、ネガティブの中に裏打ちされたポジティブが感じられます。そういうポジティブこそリアルな応援歌になり得るのだと、このアルバムに教えられました。他のアーティストによる同等に素晴らしい内省的作品に、ボブディランの『ブロンドオンブロンド』、フェイウォンの『天空』などがあるので、そちらも合わせてマストです。
