   デビュー3年目の82年にリリースされた3枚目で、初のセルフプロデュース作品。当時のヒットチャート5位にランクインし、無名だった佐野が一気にブレイクした。音楽に乗りにくいと思われる字余りの言葉を、語るような歌い方とリズムで、そしてメロディーの絶妙なコンポジションが独特の世界を作りだす。
   当時、初めて耳にした瞬間、新鮮な驚きがあった。シングルヒットの<6>は永遠の名曲であり、<9>にはコーラスに沢田研二が参加。佐野はのちに「この作品が売れなかったら、もう音楽をやめようと思っていた」と語っている。自らの音楽生命をこの1枚にかけていた。(板山美枝子）

個人的には日本アーティストのアルバムの最高傑作。
80年代をリードし、佐野元春の評価を圧倒的に高めたPOPアルバムです。
とにかく全曲名曲なのがすごい。
「SOMEDAY」、「Vanity Factory」、「Sugar Time」、「I'm in Blue」など、どれも革新的な曲ばかり。
デビューアルバム「Back to The Street」以降の３部作の最後のアルバムである本作は、
人工的な街の匂いを、ロックンロールとR＆Bのテイストで当時類をみないほど濃密に凝縮しています。
散文的な歌詞もその後のミュージシャンに大きな影響を与えています。

発表直前、元春がNHKFMの「サウンドストリート」で、毎週、完成したばかりの楽曲を紹介するのですが、
その衝撃は今でもはっきり覚えています。
当時のニューミュージック的なメロディー、リズムを基準にすると、
「SOMEDAY」の楽曲は聞きづらく感じらかったのだけど、その分惹き付けられました。
曲の圧力が高くて、そのテンションに圧倒されて聞いていたことを思い出します。
「Happy Birthday」のラストのサックスのソロが最高です。
（元春本人も当時ラジオでそう言ってました）
尾崎豊のバンドにも参加していたダディ柴田の演奏。
皆さんに聞いていただきたい名作。

ある日、それまでマッチばかり聴いていた姉ちゃんの部屋から、
何かそれまで経験したことのない「カッコイイ」音楽が流れているのが聴こえました。
ちょうど姉ちゃんだけ一人部屋になった時期で、気軽に「何この曲？」とか
聞けないような微妙な時期になっていた頃。妙に悔しかったのを覚えています。

佐野元春の存在を知ったのは、それから間も無かったけど、
この名盤を手にしたのは、大学に入って一人暮らしを始めてから。
ベスト盤を先に買ったりして、意味無く距離を置いてました。
あの日の「カッコイイ」曲は、「ロックンロールナイト」でした。
ああ、こりゃベスト盤には入らんわ。
このアルバムで聴かにゃ。そう思った。
音楽史上でも、音楽私情でも、歴史的鉄板名盤。
そんな俺も今では、幸せな？ウェディング、二児の父親です。

これは同世代体験でしかないので決して、新リスナーが同意できるものではないかもしれない。しかしロウティーンだったボクにとってのつらさ、不安定さを、不安さを支えてくれたのはモトハルのキラキラしたアレンジの中にあったソウルフルなメッセージだったのだろう。

傷ついたってStepTomorrow、ただのスクラップにはなりたくないんだ、信じる心いつまでも。。。少年の心に心地よくセンチメンタルでかっこよく、しかし確実に響いてきた彼の台詞は僕らへの応援歌だった。
誠実で愛情にあふれた彼のロックは汚れた今でも否定できないものだ。
