ファンクミュージックの創始者、スライストーンの「スタンド！」と並ぶ歴史的な最高傑作であるだけではなく、ジャンルに関係なく誰にでも是非聞いていただきたい素晴らしい作品です。
個人的な話ですが、７０年代後半の自分が子供の頃、スライの作品を探していたことがありました。
当時は暇だけはあったので、東京じゅうの中古レコード店を歩き回りましたが、このアルバムは長い間廃盤で気が遠くなるくらいに入手困難で、見つけるまでに相当な苦労をしました。
ようやく復刻されたのが８０年代の前半頃だったと思います。
この永遠に語り継がれる素晴らしいアルバムが７０年代後半から８０年にかけて、現実に封印されていたという事実は余り語られていませんが、とんでもない事だと思いますので、ここに書かせていただきます。
レコードに針を下ろした時の衝撃は未だに色褪せず、不世出の天才が送りだしてくれた、まさに革命的な名盤です。

ファンクがメッセージを届ける手段であった時期のアルバム。聴いてみるとやけにダークなファンク。なので、やたら明るい『コマーシャリズムで計算されたファンク』しか連想できない人はやめたほうがよい。ここにあるのは『明るくないファンク』＝『シリアスファンク』だ。抜きん出ているのはスライのソングライティングセンスである。名盤というのがだれにでも合うというのはうそですよ。

１９７１年に果たしてファンクという言葉があったかどうか、定かではないのですが、このアルバムの人気は凄まじいものがありました。

とにかく、当時としては、ぶっ飛んでいた、という表現が当てはまると思います。当時は、黒人公民権運動、ベトナム戦争などアメリカ社会が揺れに揺れていた時代。そこに、大衆を揺り動かすような”新しい音”が登場してきた感じです。聞いていれば、自然に体が動き出すアフリカのリズムと誰でも声を合わせられるシャウト、さらに煽動的なメッセージが込められた詞。音は、ファンキーですが、詞は時代を反映しているものになっています。プリンスやＥＷ＆Ｆ等に連なっているように思えるサウンドですが、７１年という時代を考えれば、スライの音楽の先進性が想像できます。
