英国はウェールズのカーディフ出身、１０代の頃からバンド活動をはじめ、かの「Creation」レーベルと契約した「Emily」や、「Ffa Coffi Pawb」といったバンドのメンバーが集まって１９９３年に結成されたのがこのバンドです。結成当初はテクノ・ライクなサウンド指向を持っていましたが、徐々に同郷の「Gorky's Zygotic Munch」あたりと共通するスタンスの、スペーシーなサイケデリック・ロック的なサウンド・メイキングへと進化します。何故かウェールズはコズミック・サイケの土壌があるようですね。すぐに地元のインディ「Ankst」と契約し、シングルを２枚リリースします。これによって「Creation」レーベルのオーナー、Alan McGeeに見初められ、何とアルバム７枚という破格の契約を交わします。そうして１９９６年になってリリースされたのがこのデビュー・アルバムです。ストレートなパンク・ロックからスタートするこのアルバムですが、聴き進むにつれ、キーボードやストリングスの流れるようなサウンドと、微妙で奇妙な電子楽器のサウンドがない交ぜとなって、彼ら流のサイケデリック・サウンドが完成するといった具合。そしてこれまた奇妙にひしゃげた歌詞を歌うヘロヘロなヴォーカルと、確信犯的であるような、天然であるような、つかみどころのないサウンドが繰り広げられます。非常にユニークでありながら、微妙にポップな面をも併せ持った、他に類を見ない独自のサウンドの原点。名盤です。
