   1980年代後半の坂本が志向していた「音楽的フィールド・ワーク」がひとつの結晶となった作品。当時、ニューヨーク・ニューウェイブの中心的存在だったビル・ラズウェルと共同制作された本作は、DNA、マテリアルといったNYのアーティスト、ワシントン・ファンク（ブーツィー・コリンズも参加！）、沖縄音階、バリ島の伝統音楽である「ケチャ」などが「高度に統制が効いた混沌」とでもいうべきサウンド・プロダクトのなかで集約されている。リズムのおもしろさという点では、彼の作品のなかでも特に優れていると言えるだろう。（森 朋之）

今を時めくラズウェル主宰する「アジアの音楽とロック感覚の融合をめざすレーベル」第1弾は,お馴じみ坂本エスニック。今回の「テーマ」は沖縄やインドネシアなどの島嶼アジア。沖縄がナマなのとリズムが少々油っこいのが耳をひくが概ね快調な龍一節。

5.0 out of 5 stars 今の教授の路線はこのアルバムから？, 2003/5/28
坂本龍一の魅力である「病的」で「カッコつけ」な一面が、このアルバムからは感じることができなくなった。なんか吹っ切れたようだった。
どこかに留まっていた教授が、世界へ溶け出していく様を見るようだ。

「新境地」とはよくいったもので、これ以降の教授は以前と別人のようにおおらかになった気がする。沖縄に産み直してもらったかのような印象を受けた。

この中で「リスキー」という曲、ライナでも書いてあったが、
「サカモトよりサカモトらしい曲」です。この曲、秋口に一人で山にドライブに行くときに聞くと浸れます。

ちなみに私はこれ以降の教授サウンドには手放しで喜べなくなってしまったんです。それでもＣＤは買い続けてるんですけど。

全八曲とコンパクトながら濃縮され活気がみなぎっている。教授が沖縄に傾倒しだした頃の世界を意識した野心的な作風で完成度は高い。イギーポップが参加した「リスキー」も聞き所だ。ラストの「after all」は、アンニョイなJazzよりの曲でさりげないがなかなかいい曲だ。

このCDを買って聴き、なんか今ひとつの音像だなーと思っていた。10年ほどしてLP版を入手し、ターンテーブルに載せたところ物凄い音圧が飛び出してきた。私の所有するレコードの中でもダントツのレベルの高さであり、慌ててプレイヤーのボリュームを下げたのを覚えている。そこで体験できたアルバムの中身は｢未来派野郎｣にも勝るとも劣らない強いリズム。イギーにオキナワチャンズのダーっと前に出てくる歌声。次の｢Beauty｣が全サカモトアルバム中最高傑作との考えを私は未だに崩さない。が、｢NEO GEO｣LP版は危うくその首位の座を奪取しそうになった。今はもう難しいことかもしれないが、そしてそれはとても悲しいことだが、ぜひこの作品をレコードで聴いて欲しい。そうしないと凄さがわからない。
