19歳、兄貴のカローラのハンドルを握っていた。となりには彼女が座っており、ま、青春真っ只中だったてわけだ。 カーラジオでアナウンサーが、来週だか、来月だかに、いきなりアルバムデビューするという新人の話をしていた。 「へぇ、いきなりアルバムでデビューするんだってさ、すごいな。」などといいながら、もちろん関心はそんなことにはなく、スカートからのぞく彼女のフトモモに気をうばわれていた。 青春真っ只中。 やがて、曲がはじまった。 「少女」。 「シッ」、「ちょっと、だまって」、「だまれって」。 それからさき、数年間の「彼女いない歴」をつくりだす有力な原因となった3語は30余年のときを経たいまでも鮮明におぼえている。 けれど、発売当日から始まったアルバムを聴き狂う数ヶ月の日々の充実は、失ったものとの取引に充分見合うものだった。 いま、五輪真弓のオリジナルアルバムが手に入らない。 いまのわかい人は「少女」のあとにつづくアルバム群をきくことができない。 五輪真弓のいくつかのオリジナルアルバムは、まるごとがベストアルバムといっていいほど充実しており、大半のアルバムにも不出来な曲というものが、そもそもない。 レコード会社さん、 五輪真弓は、同時代を生きる、中島みゆきや松任谷由実ほどには、あなたがたを儲けさせなかったかもしれない。 けれどそれは、持ち味のつくりだすマーケットの違いに過ぎず、その音楽の本質の高みを考えれば、オリジナルアルバムをつねに揃えて遇するべきではないだろうか。
それとも、あなたがたは音楽の歴史のなかで、あぶくのように消えてゆく大半の消耗品と、価値あるホンモノの区別がつかないのだろうか。

私は、ちまたのJ-POPの歌詞はやたらと英語が多いので苦手です。どうして日本人相手の歌に"Yeah! Baby"だの意味のない言葉を使わなくてはならないのでしょうか？それが別に気にならないという人や英語が母国語並みの人なら構わないのでしょうが、私には感情移入できず、殆どJ-POPを聴くことがありません。そんな中で、このアルバムは例外です。1972年の五輪真弓さんのデビュー作ですが、その魅力は今も色あせていません。なにより詩心のある歌詞が良いし、魅力的な陰影のある歌声を聴かせてくれます。「恋人よ」しか知らない人には、初期のフォークミュージックは新鮮に感じるだろうと思います。最近売り出されたベストアルバムには「少女」と「雨」が収録されているようですが、そのほかにも「なわとび」、「朝もやの公園で」、「はと」、「あなたを追いかけて」といった曲も聴き応えのある優れた曲です。ぜひ聴いてみてください。

1972年当時、ソロに転向し「タペストリー」という名盤を世に送り出した、キャロルキングがピアノで参加。これだけでも一聴の価値あり。さらに、ギターにチャールズラーキー。つい先日、五輪真弓と平原綾香がＴＶでこのアルバムの曲を一緒にやっていた！
