　桃太郎の物語を、太平洋戦争中に置き換えて、桃太郎軍が鬼(鬼畜米英?!)の支配する鬼が島を攻略するという話です。桃太郎は空挺部隊の隊長という設定です。南の島に進出すべく桃太郎軍が、現地人(といっても桃太郎と鬼以外はかわいい熊や猿などの動物です)と航空基地を建設したり、現地人に日本語を教えたり(皇民化教育!)する場面などはミュージカル仕立てになっていて楽しいものです。
　是非はともかく、現在では語られることの少ない太平洋戦争(大東亜戦争)における日本の立場というか、日本が正義であるという主張が語られています。「火垂るの墓」のような反戦的なものもいいが、こういう作品も見ておいて損はないと思います。

　戦争末期の映画とは思えないほどの作品で、手塚治虫氏が感動したというのもうなづけます。
　日本のアニメ史上における記念碑的作品だと思うので、ぜひDVD化してほしい作品です。

海軍省の命により、制作費27万円（現在の約4億円）、製作日数1年2ヶ月かけて1944年に製作され、1945年4月12日に公開された“戦意高揚”目的の長編アニメーションです。時代も時代だけに公開当時劇場は、空々、興行は散々だったようです。白人・海賊の騙まし討ちにあい、占領されてしまったかつての平和な王国を、桃太郎隊長率いる落下傘部隊が開放するというお話で、セレベス島への奇襲作戦を題材とし、当時のスローガンであった“アジア解放”をテーマとしています。

戦意高揚目的で作られたとはいえ、「戦時中」というリアルタイムが醸し出す空気、現在では作り得ないものです。この作品には、製作者の、職人として「アニメーションが作れるいう喜び」と、多くの制約中で「平和への願い」を感じることできます。多くのこと考えさせられる要素が多く含まれています。22世紀以後も残して頂きたいと思います。

過去に、松竹シネサロンで鑑賞しました。未だディスクになっていなかったのは、驚きです。
海の荒鷲(?)と併せて、Boxで出してもらえると幸いです。
