こうしたゾンビ映画の基本パターンを確立させたのがこの映画です。この映画のシーンのほとんどは一軒家が舞台で、そこで人間対ゾンビの死闘が展開されます。ゾンビたちの襲撃シーンも怖いですが、人間側の仲間割れで状況がさらに悪化していくという救いようの無いストーリーがさらに怖いです。ロメロ監督がこの映画を通して描きたかったのはゾンビ達の行動よりもむしろ人間のエゴではないかと感じます。ゾンビ映画に人間ドラマが加わる、ロメロ監督のゾンビ系作品が他の亜流作品と一線を画している最大の理由はこの点ではないかと思います。オススメ作品。

これ以前のゾンビ映画が、VOODOOのオカルト的なリビング・デッドであったのに対し、SF的なルールを持ったゾンビ（噛まれた者もゾンビになる、頭を撃てば死ぬ、など・・・）を「発明」したのがこの作品です。

内容はかなりインディーズ映画的色合いの強い作品です。

（実際にインディーズ時代のロメロの作品。サラリーマン時代、仲間内で資金を集め、週末をつぶして約９ヶ月で撮ったと言われています）

ゾンビの登場シーンも唐突だし、学生の映画研究会が作ったような「ド素人丸出し」の映画ですが、ストーリーよりも｢状況｣をリアルタイムで観せるという手法は、｢起承転結｣のしっかりした大手の映画会社の制作したホラー映画の常識をまったく無視していて、ニューシネマ的といおうか、当時は斬新だったのでしょう。

ところがその｢素人っぽい｣映像が｢映画｣というより｢ドキュメンタリー｣のような効果を生み出し、観客までもがゾンビに囲まれ廃屋に閉じ込められているような感覚をもたらしてくれます。

ゾンビの怖さよりも、極限状況でとる人間の行動を映し出すことに力点をおいたような作品で、｢ゾンビ｣そのものはそのシュチュエーションを作り出すためのお膳立てのような感覚です。

｢えっ、そんな！｣というような不条理なエンディングも、意表をついています。

ちなみにこの作品、現代アート作品としてニューヨーク近代美術館に永久保存されているとか。

大好きなゾンビ映画の原点ですね。
結局なんでゾンビになったかはっきり原因はわからないんですけど、
監督もそんなことより同じ人間だったのにその姿のまま怪物にかわっちゃう恐怖を描きたかったのかなっと思います。
どんな異形の怪物より怖いですよね。
