   凍れる海の広がる冬のスコットランドを舞台に、人生に思い悩む家族の心のきずなを描いたヒューマン・ドラマ。『ダイ・ハード』の悪役などで知られる名優アラン・リックマンが、自身が演出した舞台劇を自らのメガホンで映画化したもので、これが彼の映画監督デビュー作ともなった。実際の母子である主演ふたりが『から騒ぎ』に続いて共演。両者の深い余韻を与える演技も見どころである。（的田也寸志）

何年も前にこの映画を観て、あまりの良さにしばらく声を出せませんでした。舞台はスコットランドの小さな町で、劇中では特に目立った効果音や音楽はありません。ただ、たまに印象的なピアノの音楽が流れる程度です。「ピアノの音楽だけ？」と思うかもしれませんが、それで充分過ぎる程です。ストーリーは夫を亡くし、人生に失望している一人の女性とその母親の関係。その女性の息子と彼に恋しているボーイッシュな女の子（素直に気持ちを言葉に出来ないちょっと不器用な女の子）の関係。学校をサボっている２人の子供。他人の葬式に参加し評価することを趣味にしている２人の中年女性。この４組を中心に話は進んでいきます。それぞれの人物の思いが絶妙に表現されており、且つ、俳優人の演技力に脱帽です!。!最近、アメリカ映画に飽きている方、この作品は一押しです。是非観てください。

スコットランドに短期留学中に観て、実はあまり英語が聞き取れなかったりして理解できないところもあったんですが、その音楽と映像の綺麗さに感動。帰国後すぐにDVDを探して購入。音楽担当がマイケル・ケイメンだったことを知り、音楽に感動したわけを納得。内容も今度はしっかり理解でき、また感動でした。ちなみに学校をサボってた男の子役の子はハリポタにも出ているようです。

誰かから必要とされている気持ち、生(死)、愛(性)を4組8人の登場人物らの何気ない１日に見つける。
映像はワンショットワンショットが絵画のようで、優しくときに切なく響くＭ・ケイメンのピアノと共に素晴らしい脚本を、そして演じる俳優らを輝かせている。冬の夜にひとりで見たい映画。アラン・リックマンの初監督作である。
