   散歩中のチャーリーに拾われ、育てられた孤児のキッドは、5年後、貧民街でガラス屋を営むチャーリーの仕事をかいがいしく手伝うまでに成長する…。孤児と育ての親との愛情物語を、チャップリン独特のやさしいまなざしで描いたドラマチックコメディ。当初ファースト・ナショナル社内の幹部には不評であったこの作品だが、公開されるや大ヒットを記録。250万ドルもの配収をあげ、ベルリンなどへも遠征した。
   同時収録作『一日の行楽』は、中産階級の休日を皮肉った短編。珍しくチャーリーが一家の主を演じている。チャップ リン自身によればスランプ時の作品とのことだが、前半の遊覧船シーンでは、非難の声も出そうな悪ノリギャグが満載。後半もチャップリンお得意の動きの芸で見せる。両作品とも71年にチャップリン自身が再編集し、音楽をつけたサウンド版である。（生野 舞）

チャップリン作品には、コメディだが、寅さんのように、泣き笑いのある映画である。特にこのキッドには泣かされた。サイレント映画だが、声がないぶん演技（表情）より魂の叫びが聞こえてきそう。一度観たら生涯忘れられない映画とはこうしたものだろう。

　決して貧しさを現そうとしない息の合った親子の生活のリズムに活力をもらいました。
