オリコン　最高位１位（１週）　売上　６６．２万枚　ブーム到来、サードシングルにしてオリコン初の１位獲得となる。年間ベスト５位の大ヒット。
ザ・ベストテンでも最高位は１位を５週連続で獲得している。年間ベストテンでは３位になる大ヒットとなった。
前作でセカンドシングル「涙のリクエスト」が大ヒットでブームになったチェッカーズ。その勢いの中でリリースされ、またデビューシングルである「ギザギザハートの子守唄」もチャートを上昇し、１０位以内に「ギザギザハートの子守唄」「涙のリクエスト」「哀しくてジェラシー」と３曲同時にチャートインをさせる快挙を成し遂げた。
当然のごとくチェックの衣装で歌った曲である。
チェッカーズの全シングル中３番目に高い売上にも関わらず、前２作や後のシングルよりも地味な存在のシングルである。チェッカーズが後年テレビなどでヒットメドレーを歌う際にも入ってない。
ライブのセットメニューも１９８４年は入っているが、それ以降はあまり組まれてはいないが、東京ドーム公演を行った１９８８年の夏のツアーではアレンジを変えて披露され話題になった。

チェッカーズ通算3枚目のシングル。大ヒットを記録した「涙のリクエスト」デビュー曲「ギザギザハートの子守唄」と「哀しくてジェラシー」と同時に3曲同時ランクインを果たしたチェッカーズ。Ｃ/Wの「サマーガーデン」は鶴久政治氏のソロ曲です。
