最近リマスターされたり、紙ジャケで再発されたりと、ファンが困るような再発につぐ再発。そのうち、ＳＡＣＤで再発されるのでしょう。このアルバムの評価は定評のあるところですが、このポニー・キャニオン盤のみのコレクター心をくすぐる点があります。それは、トーキングドラムから太陽と戦慄パート２への移行点（チャプターの位置）が大きくずれてしまっている事です。ハッキリ言えば、製作ミスなのですが、切手やコイン収集でも、製作ミスは、逆に価値がでるのです。これを聴きながら、チャプター表示を注意して見て下さい。大きくずれている事が解ります。リマスター盤は正しい位置にチャプターが置かれていますが、このバージョンだけは、ミスしています。そのため、リマスター盤と共に、このＣＤも持ち続けています。

名盤と言われるアルバムだが、クリムゾン初めての一枚にするにはちょっと重過ぎる。またよくあるロック的な展開でもない。ジャズのジャムセッション、アンビエント、民族音楽にも近いノリだが、恐怖映画のサウンドトラックっぽくもある。どこまでが偶然か、必然なのかわからないノイズ、全体的に流れる倒錯的でヒステリック、鉄線をギンギンに引っ張ったような限界の緊張感は、このアルバム特有のものだし、クリムゾンがいかに他のプログレバンドと一線を化すバンドだったかを感じさせる。

さまざまな実験や一貫性に乏しいアプローチを重ねたKING CRIMSONがついにロバート・フリップ主導の下、ジャズロックの語法から開放され新境地に達した作品。 リズムと高反応の即興を重視したパフォーマンスはジャズロックの最終到達点を示すと同時にテクニカル・メタルやエスニック・ロックの先駆けでもあった。 問答無用の大傑作。
