タイトル通り、コミック「無限の住人」のイメージ･アルバム。

全曲、人間椅子によるサウンドトラックで、詞はコミックの内容に基づいたものです。当然のことだが椅子のアルバムとして聴いても違和感がなく、楽曲もスピーディ~スロー･テンポのものまでバラエティに富んでいて曲の展開も複雑。クオリティも申し分なく、自分は「人間失格」と同じくらい聴き込みました。自分は元々、人間椅子が好きで無限の住人は知りませんでした。このアルバムを聴いてコミックを読んだのですが実に面白い。人間椅子好きな人は絶対にはまってしまうと思うので、コミックも併せて読むことをお勧めしたいです。

「無限の住人」という時代劇マンガのイメージアルバムらしいですが、私はそのマンガのことは全く知りません。それでも全く問題なく、人間椅子の普通のアルバムとして聞ける作品。イメージアルバムであってサントラとかではないので全曲歌詞もあります。むしろ、題材が時代劇マンガという縛りのおかげで普段のアルバム以上に和で統一された世界観、歌もいつも以上に日本的で演歌・民謡テイストが強い。
「晒し首」は処刑され台の上に並べられた生首の目線から描かれた詩。怨念に満ちていた晒し首、鼻が溶け目玉が落下し、鼻の穴や目の穴に蜘蛛やコオロギが住み着いたり、自分の頭の上に登ったカマキリと月を眺めたりするうちに、いつの間にか平穏な心になり、土に返る頃にはある種の無我の境地に到ったかのような感覚。こんなすごい詩と曲を作れるのは人間椅子くらいだろう。「無限の住人」は前半の日本的な郷愁と開放感あるメロディーが素晴らしい。後半は三味線風ハードロックと浪曲・謡曲風のあまりに日本的な歌メロという強烈な組み合わせがカッコよすぎ！「地獄」はストレートでノリが良い。最後の演奏の盛り上がり方が非常にドラマチック、特にギターソロにしびれる！「蛮カラ一代記」は酔っ払ったオッサンが歌ってそうな雰囲気。「莫迦酔狂ひ」は酒の歌。中間部の展開がスリリング。「もっこの子守唄」は大正琴が響き、昔懐かしくて寂しげなメロディー。日本の歌って良いなあ…としみじみ思う。何となく必殺仕事人のエンディングってイメージ。「刀と鞘」は演歌くさい歌が良い。「辻斬り小唄無宿編」は人間椅子らしい津軽三味線ギターが大活躍。ユーモラスでやるせないメロディーが心に染みる。「宇宙遊泳」は壮大、遥か宇宙に思いをはせる。「黒猫」は中間部にテンポアップした展開をはさむタイプの大作。日本的で邪悪な詩世界。盛大で熱いギターソロで曲をしめくくるのもカッコイイ。名曲！
