当時、彼らが話題になり、ついにNHKでも特集を組まれたときに初めてTVで見た。あんな奇抜な格好をしながら、あんなにストレートで攻撃的に、しかも知性とやさしさとユーモアさえあるメッセージをたたきつけられて、自分でも気恥ずかしくなるくらい感動した。特に有名な「抱きしめたい」には、こちらの存在が粉々に無に帰するくらい揺り動かされた。泣いてしまったのだ。そして、きれいなメロディにたよらない、人間の発する言葉そのものの力に気づかされた。映画なんかで時おり、過剰な音楽がふっと一瞬消え、俳優の朗読のみが聞こえてくるときに新鮮な感動があるのと似ている。これ一曲でも、このアルバム、この伝説のグループの存在価値は揺るぎがたいものであろう。ドリアンさんは今も名を改め、言葉で人の心を揺すり、癒してくれている。朝日新聞の人生相談はTETSUYAさんの担当のときは必ず読んでます。悩みに対する解答が全くユニークでおもしろく、なるほどと納得し、癒されるのです。

「生と死」がテーマの記念すべきファースト。のほほんと生きていると、目に見えていないことがたくさんあるよってのを気付かせてくれる。「あれはいい。これは駄目」と押し付けるわけではなく、ひたすら現状を叫んでいる。「汚染蟹」「ゾウガメ」など動物をテーマにした曲もあるが、その動物達も人間と深く繋がっていたりする。別にテーマ抜きにしても音楽に乗せての詩の朗読（叫び）する方式、激しいパンキッシュなものから、陽気なお笑いもの、しんみり暗いものと曲調もさまざまな聴かせかたをしてくれるので、普通に楽しめるのではないかな。自分が楽しけりゃ、どう生きたっていいじゃんって思うのも良し。感銘を受けるも良し。何かを感じてくれればいいんじゃないかと。とにかく良いアルバムです。

このバンドは初期の頃は全く歌を歌わないバンドでした。ロックのリズムに乗せて詩を朗読したり叫んだりとかなり異質なバンドでした。この
アルバムはそんな彼等のデビューアルバム、一番好き嫌いが分かれるアルバムです。でもラストの「抱きしめたい」は世紀の傑作、この一曲だけでもこのアルバムを買う価値があります。
