アーティスト・野口五郎にとって作曲家・筒美京平という人は、ただ単に多くのヒット曲を含む楽曲を提供しただけにとどまらず（というか、それだけでももう十分ですが…）、一時期トータルでの《サウンド・プロデュース》も受け持ち、また野口の実兄である佐藤寛が作曲した、ご存じ「私鉄沿線」等の編曲を担当するなど（作曲作品のみを取り上げた、このアルバムには収録されていない。作家活動のごく初期を除き、アレンジのみの仕事はきわめてイレギュラー）、両者の歩みを語る上で、相互に重要な存在といえる。実際、野口は筒美について「恩師」と呼んでおり、抒情ポップ路線から、よりアーティスティックな方向への転換などに関しても、多大な影響を受けたであろうことがうかがえる。

この２枚組では野口＝筒美コンビにより送りだされた多くの楽曲の中から、シングルＡ面曲すべてと、カップリングやアルバム収録曲からセレクトされた佳曲の数々により、アーティストとしての野口の成長と共に変化してきた筒美サウンドの多彩さを、とことん楽しめるはずだ（なお、６枚組『GORO CD BOX』には、この２枚組の続編的存在で、楽曲がほとんどダブらない《筒美京平作品集》が含まれている）。

ちなみに、ジャケットの写真はシングル「私鉄沿線」のジャケットと同じ時撮影された、別カット（この撮影時のエピソードが、野口本人による著書『芸能人はなぜ老けない』に登場している）。
