フィッシュマンズ最後の新曲。１曲約１４分。その後の運命からすると不気味な程“予言的な”フレーズのある歌詞やコーダの展開や音色も含め、ある景色の「最果て」の様な雰囲気もあり、そしてまたここから何かが「変わり」始める、そんな予感をも抱かせた作品でもある。正直言って、この何とも言い表しようの無い曖昧さがこの曲最大の不思議な魅力になってはいる。その「変化」の先にあったものは、このバンドの名の元では新作が発表される事はもはや無い今となっては一生わかり得ないのだが、無理を承知で、やはりこの先にあるものを見てみたかった気がして仕方がなくなる、どうしようもない気持ちが聴く度に込み上げてくる。ファンには一生忘れられないスワン・ソング。ベスト盤『アロハ・ポリドール』でも最後を締めくくっている他、ラスト・ライヴを収録した『男達の別れ』ではライヴ・テイクで収録されている。

後期の音楽的成熟と並行して更なる深み、心の奥底に沈みこむ様に潜っていった
フィッシュマンズ。「宇宙日本世田谷」ではその過程が見て取れました。
そこを辿りぬけ到達したこの一曲。僕はこの曲はもはや今までの流れの延長とは
捉えられないと感じました。
今までと同じ、いやそれ以上の透明感の中に浮かぶのは日常の中にある
風景ではなく、その先を越えた世界。
歌のパートが終わった後に最後まで続く、ハミングでさえなくなってゆく
叫び声の波。ここに在る空気は皆を取り巻く渦ではなく、加速度を上げ「何か」へ向かう線。
歌詞の中の「君」はいつもの様に「一緒にいて、それで離れている」の
ではなく、すっと繋がりがほどけていってしまう。
素晴らしいけれど、それ以上に悲しい曲だと思いました。
もしも、もう一枚アルバムが作られていたなら、佐藤氏はどんな世界を
描いていたのでしょうか。

結果的にこのシングルが彼らから届けられた最後の音になってしまいましたが、発売時には、まさかそんなことになるとは思いもよらずに、新しいフィッシュマンズの方向性を示唆するものとして聴いていたものです。シングルとはいえ、13分半もある曲ですが、それでいて長さを全く感じさせないしっかりとした歌モノとしての構成のある曲です。後期フィッシュマンズは、たゆたうようなグルーヴ感やダブとアンビエントのミックス感覚などについてはよく語られていますが、歌モノとして常に良い曲を書いてきたということも忘れてはならないでしょう。これだけ長い曲でありながら、歌詞がしっかり物語りを描いているし、映像を思い浮かべられるということは、すごいことです。サウンド的には、どんどん研ぎ澄まされていっているコーネリアスにも、この歌詞の部分だけは、フィッシュマンズを超えることはできないでしょう。それだけ心にグッとくる歌詞を佐藤伸治という人はたくさん書いてきました。そして、それはまるで、自らの死を予見していたかのようでもあります。
「また今日も消えてなけりゃいいな」なんてね。
