　War(「普通じゃない」に提供)とDeuce(「Ｘファイル」に提供)を経て1998年10月1日にリリースされた4枚目のアルバムです。
　当時このアルバムには仰天させられました。トレード・マークであったハッピーな感じが全く感じられない、軽快なポップスから距離を置いたヒップ・ホップ〜オルタナの影響が強い音楽でしたから。ニーナの声にはこれまでになく歪んだエフェクトがかけられ、バックにループが使用され、音楽はシンプル・硬質・無機的な色に統一されています。レコーディングが6月から約2カ月と短いことから、日本語ライナーで指摘された通り、音についての明確なイメージがあったと思われます。この大きな変化の理由は、公式にはコメントされたことはないと思いますが、やはり北欧の生活からツアー三昧の生活という環境の変化（その後の活動休止を思えば好まざる変化でしょう）によるものと解釈するのが自然と思います。当時のTV出演時の演奏を見ましたが（ジュールズ・ホランドの"Later"）メンバーは誰もにこやかにしていなかったのが印象的でした。
　しかし、それでもなおメロディは際立って美しく、まったく飽きないアルバムと思います。強いて言えば遅めの曲が多くメリハリが乏しいのが欠点でしょうか。
　なお、このアルバムはスウェーデンでは初登場一位（これ以降スウェーデンでは全アルバムが1位を獲得）、UKチャートでも8位（UKでの本作が最高位）、世界でも300万枚売りあげています。タイトルはツアー中にバンドのメンバーが好んでプレイしたPlayStationのゲームにちなんで名づけられ、My Favorite Gameでもこのゲームのオトが使われているそうです（どれのことか僕には分かりませんが）。
　Gran Turismo OverdriveというタイトルでのリミックスされたEPが出ているようで、興味があるのですが、なかなか手に入りません・・・。

"LIFE"や"FIRST BAND ON THE MOON"の時のスウェーディシュ・ポップの軽快さから一変して、重厚で壮大な音世界。以前のちょっとキュートで、ファンシーな感じとは、随分かけ離れていて、そのギャップだけでも面白いです。サウンドそのものだけでなく、その中にある世界観もまたスケールアップされていて圧巻です。収録曲の「EXPLODE」や「HIGHER」には、ジャケット裏の情景そのままの金色の空に、ゆっくり昇っていく様な浮遊感があります。そして詞にある物語には、たくさんの失ってきたものや虚しさが描かれていて、以前の作品と照らし合わせると、まるで天国も地獄も見ちゃったような印象です。甘味の後に苦味を覚えるみたいに。カ-ディガンズのポップな雰囲気も、かなり好きですが、本作では流行り物っぽくない力量が感じられて、ますますカ-ディガンズが好きになりました。

とてもよい変化だと思う、むしろ進化か。一曲めの「パラライズ｣を聞いたときの衝撃を忘れられない。少し引き締まりすぎかもしれないけど、それでもニーナの声が良いので気にしない。
