パンクの風が吹き荒れる７０年代後半にデビューし、僅か数年で世界の頂点へと登りつめ、そしてあっさりと解散してしまった、彼らの最高傑作がこれ。
リアルパンク世代だから曲の構成は至ってシンプルなんだけど、そこは元CURVED AIRに元SOFT MACHINEに、ジャズ狂の牛乳屋の息子（←スティングのこと）がメンバーなんだから、他のパンク系バンドとは違って歌詞や演奏に関してインテリジェンスな趣がするのも当然。
『見つめていたい』は僕が知るあらゆる曲の中において、個人的に最高のナンバーです。

もしかしてスティングをソロアーティストだと思ってる人は多いかもしれないけど、個人的にはこの時の彼が一番クールでしたね。

Policeの最高傑作であるばかりでなく、ロック史上の名盤の一つに必ずや数えられるであろう重要なアルバム。
今やポップス・スタンダードとなった 7「Every Breath You Take」を始め、6「Synchronicity II」、8「King Of Pain」、9「Wrapped Around Your Finger」が次々にシングル・ヒットした。 意味深なタイトルと難解なカヴァー・アートが象徴するように、何処か陰のあるアルバムだが、その中の幾つかの曲に見られる壊れそうな美しさが感動的。
Policeはこの美しいアルバムを最後に実質的に活動を停止した。

このアルバムも１５年以上前のものになってしまいました。
スティングをソロでしか聴いたことがない人が増えても不思議ではないですよね（「ポリス」って何？という人、実際にいました）。
スティングとアンディ・サマーズ、スチュワート・コープランドが激しく火花を散らしている雰囲気がひしひしと伝わってくるＡ面部分が特に好きです。

ポリス最高の作品。歴史的名盤。これは持ってないとダメだよ。「King of Pain」はいつ聞いても涙ちょちょぎれる。ビデオクリップもよかったなあ。
