　日産CM曲「Time To Say Goodbye」が大ヒットしたことにより、日本でも人気アーティストとなったサラ・ブライトマン。ヒット効果で埋もれていた旧作の一つが日の目を見ることになった。

　原題は『Dive』。1993年作品で、エニグマに参加したことでも知られるフランク・ピーターソンのプロデュース。「海」をテーマにしたコンセプト・アルバムだ。海と言っても、「大海原」ではなく「深海」をイメージさせる神秘的な作風。幻想的なエレクトリック・サウンドと、ポップなメロディーが心地よい。

　方向性で言うと「ラ・ルーナ」にかなり近い。あれも良いアルバムだったが、実はこっちも負けていない。別ヴァージョンでシングルにも収録された「When It Rains In America」はポップなオペラといった名曲だし、A面曲だった「Captain Nemo」は意表を突く実験的な作風が面白い。「Island」も明るく、口ずさめる秀曲。

　新作として、「今」リリースされたらもっと売れるかも知れない、そんな作品である。ただし、せっかく再発売するなら、シングルのみの別ヴァージョンも追加して欲しかったな。そうすれば旧譜を持っている人にも売れただろうに。計算上、CDの余った収録時間内で収まるので余計に残念。

一連のブライトマン＝ピーターソン・プロジェクトはこのアルバムが発端となっています。最近のクラシックの歌い方を期待している人にはポップス路線は意外かもしれませんので、サラ初心者向けではないでしょう。しかし「何を歌ってもサラの声は天上の美しさをもつ」、ということを如実に証明してくれるアルバムです。なお、Once In A Life Time は同じピーターソンプロデュースのユーロポップシンガー、プリンセッサがキュートにカバーしています。そちらの方が手に入りやすいので聴いてみると良いでしょう。

彼女のファンが作ったHPに、好意的ではない事が書かれていた。このアルバム評である。が、実際聴いてみて、何の何の！この人は、そこいら辺の女性ポップ・スターが千人束になっても、適わない、モノホンの歌姫である。是非、
聴いてみて下さい。彼女程実力とルックスを伴い、商業的成功を収めている
女性歌手は、いないでしょう。ブラボーです！
