当代一のワーグナー指揮者ショルティの,「指環」を除いた全録音。いずれもスタジオ録音というぜいたくさで,歌手のぜいたくさでも録音面でも話題を提供してきた。ショルティの指揮も,一番古い録音の「トリスタンとイゾルデ」(60年)から比較的最近の「ローエングリン」(86年)まで円熟の過程が聴かれて興味深い。ダイナミックでぐいぐい押して行く勢いにあふれた初期の指揮には,ワーグナーの新しい世界がいかにも今切り拓かれつつあるという緊張感があるし,後年の優美さを増した自然体のワーグナーも見事だ。
