交響曲史上あまりにも有名なこの作品は、チェコの作曲家ドヴォルザークが1893年アメリカ滞在中に完成させた最初の作品である。全篇、黒人霊歌風な色彩が色濃く支配してはいるが、これらの旋律は実際には作曲者の故郷への郷愁が、文字どおり彼にとっての「新世界」であった。アメリカで接したさまざまな音楽に触発されて創作したオリジナルメロディである。
メリハリの効いた男性的な演奏を身上とするショルティの棒は、ここでも細部に至るまで明晰なテンションを発揮させ、民族的なセンチメンタリズムに流されることなく、絶対音楽としての感興を喚起する解釈が鮮烈だ。

ショルティのドヴォルザーク初録音。数多い「新世界」の中でも最も素晴らしい録音クォリティを持ったものといえよう。第1楽章冒頭のティンパニの抜けのよい鳴りっぷりからして見事だ。管,弦の粒立ちのよいバランスも特筆もの。雄大なスケールに繊細な感性が込められた名演。
