マイルス・デイビスが影響され尊敬したというピアニスト、アーマッド・ジャマルはユニークなスタイルの持ち主である。音を節約するようでいて結構饒舌な面もあり、聞いた印象では、ジョージ・シアリング、エロル・ガーナーやレッド・ガーランド的軽さとセシル・テイラーを髣髴とさせるパーカッシブな即興性を併せ持った不思議なピアニストだ。まさに鬼才、異才という形容がふさわしく、独特なリズム感やハーモニーのセンスは類を見ない。1978年にロンドンのロニー・スコットクラブでドラムスのフランク・ガントの演奏を偶然聴いたことがあった。ガントはバリー・ハリスやジャマルと共演した経験があるドラマーだったので、演奏の合間の休憩時間にジャマルのことを聞いてみた。彼は苦笑しながら「よく知ってるよジャマルは本当にユニークなピアニストだ」ということを強調していたことを思い出す。90年代に入ってからの久々に健在ぶりを伝えたこのアルバムでは、ジ・エッセンス、枯葉でジョージ・コールマンも加わりモーダルな自然発生的なサウンドを聞かせている。癖のあるピアニストゆえ爆発的な人気は出ないかもしれないがもっと評価されてもいい才人である。
