中学生の夏休み、某ＦＭ局夜８時台のＪＡＺＺ番組で、今では考えられないですがＬＰ１枚まるごと流してくれたＤＪがいました。児山紀芳氏です。
その児山氏のおかげで、最初は何気なく聴いていたのですが、どうも気になりだし途中からテープに収め、Hourglassパート２の美しさに打ちのめされました。翌日レコード屋に走ったのは言うまでもありません。
２０数年まえの録音ですが、キースが「これはいいピアノだ」と惚れ込んで録音しただけのことはあり、いい音を出してます。
このアルバムに出会えたことでピアノソロが好きになり、私自身がピアノを弾くきっかけにもなりました。
まさに私にとっての宝物です。

　ＬＰは２セット買った。１つは保存用、いま１つは聴きまくり用として。のちにＣＤ化されたとき、２枚組５８００円という、当時決して安いとはいえなかった値段を、ものともせずに即購入。
　今でも繰り返し聴いている。とりわけHourglass Part 2。何という美しさか。キースの即興ピアノソロの中でも、サンベアの京都Part 1、同じくサンベアの東京アンコール、そしてケルンのPart 2cと並んで、私にとっては生涯聞き続けるであろう名演だ。
　Sundialも、悲壮感ただようPart 1と、ある種の諦念をも感じさせるPart 3にはさまれて、私が勝手に「神経質なトッカータ風断章」と呼んでいるPart 2の躍動感がたまらない。　他の２曲、StaircaseとSandも佳品。
　ただ、１曲１曲が比較的短く、しかもスタジオ録音なので、長尺のライブパフォーマンスの際に聞かれるような…何といえばいいのだろう？「うねり」？「グルーヴ」？…が生じ始める前に演奏が終わってしまうような不全感も否めない。
　よって星４つとしたが、それでもここに収められた演奏が、信じがたいほどに美しく、激しく、儚い夢のような響きに満ちていることに変わりはない。個人的には、キースのスタジオ録音における最高傑作だと思っている。

珍しく、ソロなのにスタジオ録音、しかも2枚組ということで、何やら随筆集のような味わいがあった。具体的な絵的イメージはないが、短編映画をつないで見ているような気持ちにもなる。とくに好きなのは1枚めの録音で、きりりとしまったピアノの音が鋭く主題を表現する。厳しい表現だが、最後には解放が待っている。その意味では、ステアケイス、砂時計、それぞれ巧みに全体構成されているのであろう。2枚めはやや複雑な表現ながら、張り詰めた音の世界、解放へ向かう音の変化に身を委ねて楽しむことにした。
