ハービーとジョンスコって合ってますね。というかスタイルが似ている。一緒に仲良くアウトしましょう、イケイケ~っていう感じ。ビートルズ、プリンス、ニルヴァーナ等々の曲を新しいスタンダードとして取り組みました、どうだ凄いだろうという事で宣伝されてましたけど、実はそれってただアプローチを変えましたということにしか僕には聞こえず。それよかどうですこの演奏凄いですねえ、何度聴いてもかっこいいですと言いたいです。マイケルも良い意味で力が抜けていて凄く良い味だしている。自分のアルバムでやっている時よりポップな感じでやっているので、単純に盛上がって○です。ドンアライアスがもの凄くいい感じでプレイしていてなんだか匂いまでするようなオーラを放っている。他二人もさすがに怒濤のリズムを聴かせてくれます。デイブのベース、特に説得力あり！　全体的に良いんですが、やっぱりハービーのピアノが思いっきり歌っていて素晴らしいです。彼のソロの"マンハッタン"も泣けるぜ。

1995年6月14-16日、ニューヨーク、マンハッタン・センター・スタジオにて録音。ハービー・ハンコックがアコースティック・アルバムを出したのは何と15年ぶりだった。メンバー的にはジャズ好きならすぐ分かるほど現在最強とも言える面子がそろっている。

曲目は1.ドン・ヘンリー2.ピーター・ガブリエル(!)3.ビートルズ4.ベイビー・フェイス5.スティービー・ワンダー6.シャーデー7.サイモンとガーファンクル8.プリンス9.ニルヴァーナ10.ハンコックのオリジナル11.スティーリー・ダンがオリジナルとなっていてそのジャズ版というふれこみだ。つまりは最近の曲で『スタンダード』と呼べるモノという意図なのだろう。この辺ブラッド・メルドーの試みと似ている。

ところがメルドーの作品と違い、面子がこれだけそろっていながらあまりワクワクしない。何故か考えてみるとボブ・ベルデンのアレンジが一枚かんでいるところが気に入らないようだ。メルドーは自分の気に入ったモノを自分のセンスで見事にジャズ仕立てにしているが、演奏している面子がホントにピーター・ガブリエルの『So』を聴いているか怪しい。ましてやスティーリー・ダンのブレイク前の『嘘つきケティ』を聴いているか怪しい、と思ってしまうようだ。きっと聴いていない。

やはりこういう曲をやるにはオリジナルへの愛情がなくてはどんなに腕はあってもダメだと思う。

モダンジャズってそもそもこんな風に、音楽に対する明らかな意図をもって始まった音楽だったはずだろう?

チャーリー･パーカーがやろうとしたことは、音楽の中でどれだけ自己を表現できるかの限界に挑戦するような作業で、曲なんてあくまでもその題材でしかなかったはず。それがいつの間にか自己模倣を重ねるうち自家中毒に陥ってジャズは終った。ハンコックは明らかな意図をもって選曲を行い、演奏者のための表現としてのジャズを取り戻そうとしてみたのだろう。
