何と凄い演奏だ！カラヤンやベームなどの昇天させるような「美しい」ザ・グレートはどこにもない。ただ奔流のように流れ落ちてゆく。50分があっという間である。フルトヴェングラーの録音は、1950年代の円熟した演奏も言うまでもなく素晴らしいが、大戦中のこのような荒々しい、誰も真似できない演奏もまた、フルトヴェングラーという偉大な指揮者の偉大さを証明している。

ナチス時代、ドイツの帝都ベルリンでのライブ録音。

ドイツ・ロマン主義が現実に行き着いた、あの恐るべき世界を体現したかのような、戦慄的な演奏。

殊に、戦争末期の演奏である「魔弾の射手」序曲は、ロマン主義芸術が野蛮に堕する一歩手前、栄光と幻想に彩られたゲルマン帝国の最後の輝きの如き、鬼気迫る録音。

フルトヴェングラーに象徴される、当時のドイツ市民の内部に巣食った矛盾と葛藤が、閉塞した特殊状況において、夢魔のように増幅し、轟音となって降り掛かってくる、そんな妄想を抱かせられる。

ナチスによる人類史上空前の蛮行を背景にして、これ程の「美」があり得た、と言う事を考えるにつけ、「芸術」なるものの不可解と、業の深さを思い知らされた。
