　数学者の森殻氏は、或る時、「老いとは何か？」と問はれて、「若さからの解放」と答えたそうである。−−若さとは、人が、それから解放されるべき何かなのである。−−ブラームスの二つのピアノ協奏曲を聴くと、この言葉を思ひ出す。ブラームスが残した二つのピアノ協奏曲を聴いて、誰もが感じる物は、この２曲の間に流れたブラームスの人生の時間である。ピアノ協奏曲第２番の、あの晩秋の木漏れ日の様な境地は、ブラームスが、「若さからの解放」を体験して初めて為し得た境地である。だが、ブラームスが、まだその「若さからの解放」を達成して居なかったピアノ協奏曲第１番も、何と素晴らしい曲だろうか。
　このＣＤは、１９７０年代の若きポリーニが、当時、ヨーロッパの指揮界の長老の一人であったベームと共演して、そのブラームスのピアノ協奏曲第１番を演奏した記録である。冒頭の、あの荘厳な序奏は、あの時代のベームとウィーン・フィルの演奏その物である。そして、それに続いて始まるポリーニのピアノには、１９７０年代のポリーニのきらめきが溢れて居る。速めのテンポで第一楽章は劇的なクライマックスに至る。第二楽章は、ポリーニの、余計な感傷を排したピアノの美しさが素晴らしい。そして、第三楽章は、ポリーニの明晰さとベームのあの独特のアクセントが共鳴して、最高の演奏と成って、終結する。
　１９７０年代のポリーニがいかに輝いて居たか、そして、あの時代のベームとウィーン・フィルの偉大さを想起させられずに居られない演奏である。
