リアル・モッズの雄、『スモール・フェイセス』。
'６６年リリースの記念すべきデビュー・アルバム。
当時のロンドンの雰囲気をそのままにブルーズ、
Ｒ＆Ｂをも飲み込むマリオットのボーカルには
圧巻である。
ソウルフルな６「.What'Cha Gonna Do About It」
やキャッチーな１２「 Sha La La La Lee 」など
このバンドでなくしては醸し出せぬ魅力が炸裂！

マックのヒップなオルガン、ケニーのラウドな
ドラム、ロニーの個性的なベース、どれを取って
も本物でこのあたりが当時無数にいたといわれた
モッズ・バンドと一線を画すことになる。
そして忘れていけないのは自作曲のクオリティー
の高さであろう。ここからが黄金のソング・ライター
・コンビ(Marriot,Lane)の誕生だ。

ボーナス・トラックとしてフランス盤ＥＰの音源
が加わってるのも嬉しいところ。
これを聞かずしてモッドは語れない最重要作！

モッズ。あぁモッズ。
これは本当にモッズなんです。
みんなこれを聴いてキュンとすればいいのに。
まさにブリティッシュ。
彼らのファーストです。何という黒さ。カッコよさ。
ビートルズ→フー→キンクスまではみんな結構聴いてくれるんですが。
その一個先を。お願いします。

ロンドン、イーストエンド出身のモッズバンドのデビューアルバム。まず'66年にしてこのサウンドは驚嘆に値する。同時期にこんな重い音を出していたバンドはほとんどいなかった。ロンウッドの在籍していたバーズかクリエイションくらいか？同時期のザ・フーよりもハードである。マリオットのメイヴィスステイプルばりのキーの高いソウルフルなシャウト、ディストーションの効いたグレッチのギター、ロニーの重いベース、マックのブッカーＴに影響を受けたオルガン、ケニーのシャープなドラム。どの曲も文句なしにかっこいい。はっきりいってハードロックである。ツェッペリンがパクッた「ユーニードラビン」も入っている。黒さで言えばザ・フーの1st「マイジェネレイション」を遥かに凌ぐ大傑作である。ポップソングである「シャラララリー」でさえマリオットのボーカルのおかげで真っ黒である。当時メンバーは二十歳前後であるが、演奏力はかなりの水準をいっていると思う。個人的にはボーカリストとしてのマリオットは英国史上ナンバーワンだと思っている。ジャケもいかしてる。アイドル然としているが、全員のルックス、髪型、ファッションどれをとってもかっこいい！（マックはおりもまさおに似た男前）おまけに全員、身長が１６０センチだったのだ！こんな完璧なモッズバンド、過去にも未来にも存在しないでしょう！必聴、必携盤です！！！！
