ヤン・ガルバレクの深いサックスの音をきくと、どうしても北欧の厳しい自然を連想してしまう。崖に立ち、氷山に向かっているような…でも実際はそんな陳腐な事じゃなくて、何か普遍的なものを探り、志向する音楽に違いない。アメリカのジャズにはエンターテインメントの伝統、闘争の歴史がある。そこへいくと北欧のジャズから出発したアーティストたちには、純粋な音の旅を通して自然の原理を探って行くような、浮世ばなれして飄々とした感じがある。だからガルバレクとヒリヤードの顔合わせは、ファンにとっては意外というより至極納得のいくものだった。完璧なハーモニーがつくるドローンとサックスの響きが、喜怒哀楽を越えた涙を誘う。

ノルウェーs出身のヤン・ガルバレク（sax）と、英国のヒリヤード・アンサンブル。ともにECMレーベル所属という縁から、93年に初のコラボレーション作『オフィチウム』の録音を果たした。

古楽とジャズ即興の融合から生まれる独自の音響美で好評を博し、クラシックやジャズにとどまらない、ジャンルを超えた音楽を作っている。

グレゴリオ聖歌ベースに展開される、アンサンブルの静粛さに　ガルバレクがテナーとソプラノサックスで独特のソロやアンサンブルとの綺麗なハーモニー作られている。ガルバレクが好んだやわらかいサックスの音色は人の声に似た性質をだしている。グレゴリオ聖歌の透明で厳かで隙の無い完成された宗教音楽にサックスが入ったら　どんなことになるかが？聞き所。

自分的に　びっくりしました。あまりにもすごすぎて。。

サックスが上手い下手なレベルをはるかに超越して、新たな世界を作り上げるのが脅威的なレベル。
