スラッシュ・メタル四天王と言えば、スレイヤー、メタリカ、
メガデスとこのアンスラックスだが、
今でもスラッシュとして、頑張っているのはスレイヤー
だけになってしまった。少々寂しい気もするが、
その中で当時、良く聞いていたのがこのアンスラックスだ。
これは、３枚目のアルバムなのだが、このアルバムで
アンスラックスの名が結構広まった重要なアルバムではないだろうか。
正確無比なDrに、ザクザクと押し寄せて来るギター、
柔と剛のその展開力の凄まじさに最初聞いた時は
全身鳥肌モンだったことを覚えてる。
中でも6の「インディアンズ」という曲は
シングルカットもされて、MTVでやってたこのPVを見て、
一瞬で虜になってしまった。
だが、もしその最初に見ていたバンドがスレイヤーだったり、
メガデスだったりしたら、多分そっちに夢中になっていただろうが。
まぁ、何でも最初が肝心だと言う事なのだろう。
収録曲の23、先ほどの6はアンスラックスの
定番中の定番なので一度聞いてみると良い。

どう考えたってアンスラックスたるものはゴリゴリバッキングギターと硬質ベンベケベースと天才的ドラムが繰り出すヨダレが出ちゃう程かっちょいいリズムチェンジとリフの応酬にべラドナさんの「べしゃり」的な歌声が絶妙な絡みでブレンドされなくてはなりません。このアルバムを大音響で聞きながら当時よくＭＴＶなんかで見たスラッシュメタル特集でのアンスラックスのビデオクリップ映像を思い出しています。彼らの超~楽しそうな風貌と裏腹なバリバリテクニカルな演奏。絶対的な男の魅力に溢れていたものです。当時中学生の多感な時期にこんなの聞いてごらんなさいよ？いまだに聞いちゃうんですから（笑）。

　ANTHRAXはリフ作りと雑食性においてスラッシュメタル界で異彩を放っていました。彼らのリフは本当に「スラッシュ感染」しやすい中毒性があります。　1stではNWOBHMを基調にスラッシーな方向性を見せていましたが、2ndでは歌えるヴォーカルを入れてキャッチーかつ獰猛な姿勢を見せ、この3rdでスタイルを確立したといっても過言ではありません。
　ニュ-ヨークの街に流れるハードコアやヒップホップが好きで、実験的に取り入れたというよりも自然な流れでバンドサウンドに入ってきているという感じで現今のラウドロックの元祖のような存在です。
　とはいえ単なる遊び半分ではなく、腐った音楽ビジネスに怒りをぶつけ、音楽にかける信念を歌った「Imitation Of Life」の歌詞を見ると彼らのガチンコな姿勢が分かります。
　皮肉を込めた批判に満ちた歌詞を見るにつけ、HMは「怒れる若者」の音なんだなとつくづく思います。
