　世の中には、「ロックってどんな音楽？」という問いに明確に回答してくれるアルバムがいくつかありますが、これもそのひとつ言って良い作品かと思います。
　カルメン・マキの上手さとパワーを兼ね備えたヴォーカルに春日博文のメロディックでエモーショナルなギター、そしてなんといっても印象的なのは、川上シゲさんのベースです。ティムボガートや、ジョンエントウィッスルもぶっとぶんでしまいそうなうなりをあげて歪みまくるベースサウンドは圧倒的。多くの目立ちたがりなロックのベース弾きに「ベースやってて良かった」と思わせてくれるとてもかっこいいベースプレイを聞かせてくれます。
　楽曲もヘヴィでありながら疾走感もあるハードロックにメロウで美しいナンバー、そして初期ブラックサバスを彷彿とさせる陰鬱でヘヴィな雰囲気のハードロックがあったりと非常に充実しています。歌詞も深みがあってとても良いと思います。
　まさに日本が世界に誇れる「ロックの超名盤」です。普段洋楽しか聴かないという人も是非最初から最後まで通して聴いてみてください。きっともう二度と手放せなくなるアルバムのひとつとなることでしょう。

マキ＆オズは1st.の評価が高いが、私にはこれが最高です。米国西海岸にスタッフを含め十数名が４ヶ月滞在し制作した結果がこれ。2nd.から加入したラッキー川崎（ご冥福をお祈りします）のオルガンやソリーナ（ストリングスKb）で音に厚みが出たうえ、シゲの歪んだ（マエストロのブラスマスター＋サンのアンプ？）重いベースが独特のヘヴィネスを出しています。一部クリムゾンっぽい部分が気になるが、アルバムとしてのトータルな完成度（吉田カツのジャケットを含めて）は彼等のオリジナルスタジオ版3枚の中で最高と思います（アナログ盤は見開きでないのに、ジャケの内側にも絵が書いてありました）。高校生の時に福岡の電気ホールで解散前のステージを見て、シゲのフィードバックしたベースソロにぶっ飛んだのが昨日の様に思い出されるのです。

マキの1番好きなアルバムはクリムゾンの「アイランド」でした。この感性がすごいな〜と思って逆にマキを好きになりました。和性ジャニス的に言われますけどかなりナイーブ。しかしへヴィでふか〜い。これが、セカンドです。「アイランド」も是非聞いてください。
