'96年発売のベストアルバム。
ジャケットデザインはあまり誉められませんが、貴重音源も収録の名編集盤です。
'76年の幻のシングル「スローバラード／やさしさ」は初のシングルバージョンの再発。
トランジスタ・ラジオは未発表の初期録音。イントロとエンディングが長すぎるのがいまいちですが、中間部の削られていない

フルサイズのスタジオ録音は初登場となります。
RCの未発表スタジオ録音が登場したのはこれが初の事でした。その後はいまだにありませんが。

音源はリマスターされているのか過去のCDより音質が向上しています。
これに「ハード・フォーク・サクセション」を加えれば'80年までのRCの軌跡は終追えると思います。

リマスターがされて音が良くなってます。しかし好みの問題だと思いますが、リバーブをかけ過ぎたような感じの音質が好きになれません。それでもトランジスタ・ラジオの完全版が収録されているのが、このベスト盤の最大の魅力です。

キティとポリドール時代の音源に偏ったしたベストであり、またいわくつきの「カバーズ」音源が時代をちょっと飛んでちょこんと一曲収録されているなど、レコード会社側の諸事情のあるベスト盤であるにしろ、制作陣のＲＣに対する愛情溢れた素晴らしい一枚である。

「WONDERFUL DAYS」と「GRATEFUL DAYS」という２枚の素晴らしいリマスタリング・ベスト盤が出た昨今であはあるが、この「SOULMATES」が発表された当時には、それまで入手できていた音源の別バージョンを聴くことができたのはこの一枚だけだった。

「スローバラード」「やさしさ」はともにシングルバージョンでフェイドアウトのタイミングやミックスが異なっているし、なんといっても８分を越える「トランジスタ・ラジオ」のロング・サイズなんちゅう秘蔵音源がまさか存在したなんて…。この音源が聴けるのは現在もこの盤だけであり、それだけでもこの盤の存在は大きい。またリマスタリングも含めよい仕事をしている。

星２つ★★の評価で良いわけがない。星５つに限りなく近づけたいがために、あえて書き込みをさせていただいた。
