なぜDVDが出ないのだ！と怒りたい。大変好きな作品。設定は中国軍閥時代。おそらく清朝末期から国民党支配時代にかけてのどこかだと思われるが、金持ちの家に若きコン・リー演じる元女学生が第四婦人として輿入れしてくる。四合院の一角を与えられ、先輩婦人方への挨拶、毎夜行われる紅い提燈の奇妙でエロティックな儀式を経験し、他の婦人と牽制しあいながら旦那様の訪れを院の一角でひたすらに待つ日々を送る。映画中の場面はほとんど彼女の暮らす四合院の中から動かない。閉鎖的な環境の中で他の婦人との陰湿なにらみ合いと命をかけた嫌がらせを続けるうち、彼女はだんだん崩壊していく。紅い提燈がエロティックな束縛の象徴として大変効果的に使われており、ライバル婦人たちのキャラも立っており、何より次第に限界に近づいていく若き第四婦人をコン・リーが寡黙に演じている。しつこいが、ぜひ、ぜひDVDで復刻して欲しい作品。話のまとまりとその芸術性の高さは香港映画の宝だと思う。

大好きです。二回以上は見ました。貧しい女の子が仕方なく嫁いだ一夫多妻の金持ちの「旦那様」の家・・中に入って見れば、たった一人の旦那様の「取り合い」を巡って繰り広げられるあさましい泥沼・最初は優しく良い人に見えた「先輩」達が次第に本性現して行く様・可愛くない召使・女同士のドロドロが、見てて(自分も一応女性なので)すごく良く分かり、感情移入して見てしまいます。内容はすごく疲れるのに美しい映像・冷たい空気までが伝わってくるような張り詰めた雰囲気。理性と自分の世界を持った主人公が、最初は自分が閉じ込められたこの世界をしっかりした目でクールに見つめているのに、次第に巻き込まれ、自分の中の女性としての嫌な部分を引き出されざるを得なくなって行く。そしてついに狂気・・始めから夢も希望も無く、だからこそその悲しさが美しい・そんな映画です。主人公が言った言葉「一体この家の人達は人間を何だと思ってるの?」心に残ります。

映像、装飾、脚本、演技すべてにおいて最高のものを引き出したチャン・イーモウ監督の紛れもない最高傑作。
中国アールデコで装飾された室内や完全にシンメトリックに撮られた映像を見ていると中国という国がヨーロッパと地続きであることを改めて気づかされます。重厚でエステティックな舞台装置の中に悲劇を描いていく様はまるでヴィスコンティの映画でも見ているかのよう。様式美を徹底的に追及した作品であり、後の作品でこういう様式美が薄れていくのは監督の意図したこととはいえ残念な気がします。
紅のランタンが濃紺の夕暮れに浮かび上がる映像は筆舌に尽くしがたい美しさです。
