「赤色エレジー」がヒットしちゃってテレビにゲタはいて出ていたのがもう15年前となると,最近のあがたのタンゴぶりに見られるアクティブさは貴重だと思う。時間なんてほっといても流れるんだもんね。デビュー作(これ以前に実は自主制作盤あり),林静一画の美しいジャケット,見開きオリジナル附録付でなくて残念『乙女の儚夢』72年作。ゲスト多彩74年作『噫無情』これまたカラー・ブックレットなしで無念。さらに75年発表の(制作は74年)あがた監督主演映画『僕は天使ぢゃないよ』のサントラ盤と,決して精緻でなくどちらかといえばラフでルースなセンチメンタルだが,それだけにあがただけのズサン美がとこしえに力強い泣き節なのである。

とにかく独特のムードを纏った作品である。
はっぴいえんどやムーンライダーズにも通じる日本の情緒や懐古的な風情を楽しむといった要素は感じられるのだが、もっとずっとひっそりとしている感じがして、デビュー作にして既に老成しきっている感じが薄ら怖ろしい。

その後のあがたは、もっといろいろな音楽(弾けすぎて逆に空怖ろしかったりもするものもある)をやっているのを見ると、これが特に彼の音楽原点だったわけでもなかったのだろうが、言えることはこの時期は大正ロマンの幽玄な世界観に痺れていたのだろう。
それにしても、このアルバムの編集力は、この当時としては斬新だっただろうなと関心させられる。歌と歌の間に挟まれる手紙を読み上げる女学生の語りや祭での大道芸人の口上など多彩なSEが、このアルバムのタイムスリップ感覚を格段と引き上げていると思う。
また「乙女の儚夢」と「赤色エレジー」のメロディが同じであるというのも、なかなか巧妙なテクニックだ。この今でも懐かしのメロディなどで採り上げられる稀代の名曲を、実に効果的に配置している。(ちなみに懐かしのメロディであがた本人が出演していたとき、他の出演者がかつてに比べ衰えを隠せないのに対し、明らかに彼だけが現役感バリバリで、全く古びれていないことに驚かされた）

どんないきさつで当時このLPを手に入れたのかは定かではない。
30年近く前のやっと「俺は子供じゃない」といきがりはじめた
中学生には、問答無用のインパクトがあった。
記憶の底にある薄暗い路地裏で、壁の穴から覗き込むような
後ろめたいような気分にどきどきしながら、何回も繰り返し
聴いたような記憶がある。

ジャケットは小さくなってしまったし、当時は無かった歌詞カードも
入っている新品だけど、やっぱり頭の中の路地裏と壁の穴は今でも
しっかり残っていた。
涙出そうです、聴くべし。

特別に「あがた森魚」のファンでもないのですが…。

３０年経っても色あせることがない。だから、誰が聴いても新鮮さを感じるだろう。「女の友情」などはＳＰ盤の原曲にあがたが唄をかぶせているだけだが何故か今でも耳に残っている。「赤色エレジー」は歌を聴いてから林静一の原典を探して読んだ。何となく「時間ですよ　昭和元年」に通じるものがある。「冬のサナトリウム」を聴いてサナトリウムの意味が気になって調べた。「大道芸人」の口上は、多分坂野比呂司じゃないかと思うのだが…。「乙女の儚夢」は大正から昭和初期の世情が窺われる（歌詞の内容が未だに解析できていないが…）。
よく分からないけど面白い世界だといえる。
