5.0 out of 5 stars ブラウンで一番好きなアルバム, 2008/12/18
ブラウンは大好きで彼の関係するアルバムは20枚位持っていますが
その中でもこのアルバムが一番好きです。
ブラウン＝ローチ結成後のロサンゼルスでの2回のライブ演奏を纏めたもので
レコード時代には2枚に分けて発売されてました。
ＣＤになって1枚で聴けるようになったのは嬉しいことです。
1〜4が54年8月、5〜8が54年4月の演奏となっています。
ライブらしい興奮と活気が伝わってくるアルバムです。

レコードでは余り音質が良くなかったですが、ＣＤになって可成り音質改善が見られ
ブラウンの輝くような音色のトランペットを聴くことが出来ます。
ついつい大音量で聴いてしまい家族から冷たい目で見られたりします。

録音時ブラウンはまだ２３才だったとは思えないような演奏で、
彼がもっと長生きをしてくれたらどんな音楽を聴かせてくれたのだろうと考えると
つくづく残念でなりません。

　ハードバップ３大バンドの１つ、Brown-Roach Quintet のロサンゼルス「California Club」における、前半4曲は54年8月、後半４曲は54年４月の、２回のライブを収めたコンプリート・バージョン。Clifford Brown は2ヶ月前の54年2月には Art Blakey 「A Night at Birdland」に出ていたわけで、まさに自分の名前を冠したバンドを結成したばかりの初々しい奮発も伝わってくる、華やかさに充ちたデビュー･ライブ。

　メロディアスで自信あふれるフレージングと、ジャズそのものといえる見事なアーティキュレーション。前に車でかけていたときに彼女が「これ誰？」ときいてきた、というだけでも（えっ？　聴いてたの、という感じ）、強烈な輝きを発している演奏ということが明らかに。個人的には後半４曲から先に、続いて前半4曲の順に聴く。メンバー紹介のアナウンスがライブの雰囲気で楽しいし、名盤「Stitt, Powell, J.J.」でも証明されたように、「All God’s Chillun Got Rhythm」は「Jor-du」「Delilah」「Cherokee」にも増して冒頭が似合う。

スタジオ録音をいくつか残しているブラウン＝ローチのコラボレイトにとってコンサートでの録音は珍しく、それだけに両者の本領を発揮したライブになっている。ジョードゥ、言い出しかねて、君にこそ心ときめく、パリの舗道といったポピュラーなナンバーに加えサンセット・アイズ、クリフォード・アクスなどの美しいオリジナルなども披露し、彼らのフォーマットのレベルの高さ、実力が遺憾なく発揮されたアルバムである。僕個人としてはテンダリーのブラウンのソロに彼の歌心の真髄を見た思いである。54年から56年という２年程度のコラボレイトのなかで、彼らが掴みつつあった、ハードバップの本質と来るべきジャズの可能性がこのアルバムに凝縮されている。パーカーにせよ、ブラウンにせよ少なくとも後４，５年活躍させたかったという気持ちは僕だけではないだろう。それは、セロニアス・モンクやブレイキーの変わらぬ素晴らしさとは違った、ジャズのイノベーターとしての可能性ゆえの期待なのである。しかし、それを言っちゃーおしまいよ！という声もすぐに聞こえてきそうなのが、いつもながらの自問自答なのだが・・・・。どのような状況においても、最善、最良のソロを残したブラウニー。それは、紛れもなく、かけがえのないジャズの遺産であり、常にスタンダードにたちかえった歌心を僕らに教えてくれるのだ。
