「新世界」は輝き溢れる名演で有名だが,今回のCDはずいぶんと鮮度が落ちているように聴こえる。これは要改善。スラヴ舞曲以降は,その熱っぽく引き締まった響きと,この年代とは思えない抜けの良い音質とで,胸のすくような快感に浸れる。

まず古い録音なのに音質がすごく鮮明なのには驚く。こういう土俗的な迫力に満ちた音楽はやはり少しでもいい録音で聴きたいと思うが、これなら現在のデジタル録音に比べても遜色はない。演奏はこの曲のベストに挙げられる出来栄えで、オケもそうだが作曲者特有の民族臭が鼻につかず、清澄な弦の響き、ティンパニのここぞというときの迫力は曲のテーマである「望郷」を生ぬるい感傷に耽溺するような弱さではなく、新世界での新しい一歩という希望として表現している。ケルテス/ウィーンフィルのコンビの相性は素晴らしく、この他にブラームス、シューベルトの交響曲、そしてモーツァルトの「ハフナー」等若々しくいて芸術的な香気に満ち溢れた録音が目白押しである。不慮の事故が無く、もしまだ彼が存命していたら今は死語となりつつある巨匠と呼ばれる存在になっていたことは間違いないだろう。本当にこの才能の消失は音楽ファンの哀惜する最たるものであった。
